Parents: Please do not bring your babies or children to this Emergency department - I have legitimate concerns about the safety of babies and children.
This hospital is right down the road from me and I had to bring my six month old here last night due to him uncontrollably vomiting and continuously going limp and in and out of consciousness. I had to start yelling for someone to help us because once we were given a bed, we were left alone for about thirty minutes while my baby continued to go completely limp. Nobody was monitoring him. Finally a nurse heard me yelling for help, saw my baby go limp, and ran and got a doctor. The doctor was completely clueless, didnât give me any information, then disappeared for hours. Every time someone would come see my baby, it was followed by at least an hour of us being completely alone. There was nobody in sight, not even at the nurses station to monitor his vitals.
The staff needed to give my baby an IV to draw his blood and hydrate him, but the nurse who inserted the IV didnât hit a vein. They kept the IV in place, and whenever they tried to give my baby fluids, he would scream in pain and his arm would balloon up, and the nurses even noted this. Several nurses tried to find another place to administer an IV and eventually just gave up. So my baby had a needle in his arm for six hours that they couldnât even use. Other than us being left alone for seven hours without being monitored, the staff not being able to administer an IV was the most alarming part of this experience. They just gave up and gave us a bottle of pedialyte (that he threw up), and came back over an hour later with no answers or solutions.
We had to ask a janitor for help because we couldnât locate any staff throughout the night, despite the ER being empty. I found a resident doctor and she said she would find the doctor to go over my sonâs labs since it had been hours. The resident doctor was then walking out with her backpack an hour later, made eye contact with me and apologized because she forgot to get the doctor. The doctor finally came in (six hours later) and said they donât know whatâs wrong with my baby but he would give us Zofran. When asked, the doctor could not tell us how often to give it to our baby, and how many days to give it to him.
We were then left alone again for an hour. We arrived at 5:00pm and at 11:50pm, I had to again ask a janitor if she could find someone for me because nobody had checked on us in hours, and nobody was at the nurses station. The charge nurse then appeared and said âoh, I thought you were discharged already.â She then told us she was surprised my baby wasnât transferred elsewhere, and told us that if we have another episode, to go somewhere with a pediatrics unit. I will never bring my child here again. Itâs like the staff have never cared for a baby before. I have never seen such poor communication, physical absence, lack of urgency, lack of care, and incompetence. IVs can literally save lives and the staff here couldnât give one to my son and just gave up. They couldâve used an ultrasound to locate a vein, but this wasnât even explored.
We were there for seven hours, given zero answers, and had to hunt and beg people to help us. We had the whole place to ourselves and I have no idea where the staff were. It pains me that Iâll be receiving a fat bill for this. We wouldâve had better luck at an urgent care. Our pediatrician previously told us to avoid bringing our baby here due to their similar concerns, but we had no choice due to my son going unconscious. If you can make it to Beaumont Royal Oak, please take your little ones there for...

Absolutely one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a hospital.
My wife and I made the mistake to have our baby here. There was only a couple decent workers in the entire place. Everyone was extremely rude and acted like doing their job was optional and an inconvenience.
It started by us getting checked in my wife was in a lot of pain, nauseous and had bad heart burn. The doc ordered medicine for her nausea and heartburn. It took the nurse over 2.5 hours to get my wife her meds Not due to being busy but due to being neglected. We brought it up to the nurse several times. Then finally, when the doctor came back in she asked how my wife was feeling we told her what was going on. She looked to the nurse asked why she didn't give her the medicine the nurse then said that the iv that they were going to give her would help out with that. The doctor then told the nurse The iv will not do that and then pulled her off in private to scold her. The doctor then came back in and apologized several times.
THE PEDIATRICIAN WAS BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL AND RUDE. Besides the fact of HIPAA violations telling all kinds of personal information Infront my family and the photographer at the hospital. She was EXTREMELY rude while talking to my wife, made her seriously cry. While my wife was crying she buried her head in my chest. The doc extremely rudely asked her "ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME!?" At that time I asked her to leave she tried to come back in a little late to try it again and I stopped her at the door then eventually shut the door on her. I've consulted 3 other pediatricians about her concerns and actions they said she had no grounds for it and expressed she was very uneducated. The nurse that was present at the time came back in and apologize that they have for the doctor several times.
Our experience didn't stop there. The Cafeteria staff wasextremely rude. Truly and honest I fully understand the fact that the cafeteria was short-staffed. I called to order my wife some food waiting on hold for 40 minutes. Before I decided to just go down to the cafeteria and buy food for her and myself not thinking it would be an issue and make everyone's life easier. The Cafeteria was empty of staff and customers besides one lady at the register myself and two other hospital staff. I asked the lady at the register for some help she was extremely rude and snide. Saying she was extremely busy and couldn't help me, the 2 other people getting food were no where ready to be checked out. Then I pointed out the fact that she was playing FarmVille on her phone. So this whole experienced turn out to be the challenge just to get us food.
Another notable event was the two ladies at the front door (garden enterence) doing covid screening were rude and degrading towards people. They acted very juvenile and treated people horribly. I heard several comments during her stay there and then degrading people as they walked by. They were saying it quietly enough so only them to could hear it.... So they thought. I delt with them several times and not once had even a decent interaction with them
Believe it or not there is more stories from our 2 night stay. The only reason I gave a 2 star was cause there was a couple good people and in all fairness my son left healthy although they didn't have a ton with that.
If it's a life or death matter obvious I'm not going to try to turn you away from here. Anything less than that please go else where.
A little side note there's a veterinary clinic like 5...
Read more*8-8-2024: I seriously wish my mother's doctors/specialists worked out of a different hospital. She is forced to get care here. She was told to be here at 8am for a liver biopsy starting at 9am. But, just like EVERYWHERE else in this hospital, it is now almost 10am and we have no idea what's going on. There is a bunch of nurses, I assume, hanging out at the nurse's station. I went to ask for an extra blanket for my mother, since this hospital is ALWAYS the temperature of a walk-in freezer, & wanted to know when the biopsy would get started; I was completely ignored. I know that we may have to wait, but a little communication would be nice. My father is currently at St. Joe's; I WISH my mother could go there.
5-16-23: My mother had pacemaker surgery today. I was given a patient number & was told I could keep track of her surgery status with that number on the screen in the waiting room. IF!!!!! the nurse who eventually escorted me took me to the CORRECT waiting room. They had me wait in a waiting room FULL CIRCLE across the hospital. When I asked why I was given a number for a waiting room monitor I wasn't going to be in, the nurse guiding me BACK TO THE WAITING ROOM I SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN! basically told me check-in doesn't communicate with pre-op. WHAT?!? Again, I wish my mother wasn't forced by her insurance to go to this hospital!!! LATEST UPDATE: 4/27/2022: I wish I could post my picture of it, but the waiting room is FILTHY!!! There are shriveled up pieces of food & crumbs on the table. I had to ask one of the nurses about coffee, & she looked at me like that was "beneath" her & how dare I?. I did get coffee, but the sugar/creamer station had WAY expired liquid creamer (tasted sour & left floaters). I'm not upset over expired coffee creamer; it's the fact that the rest of the hospital may look clean, but the waiting rooms make me want to wait in my car. Gross!, & SO unsanitary!!
EDIT: Monday, June 20, 2021 @ 6am. Kathy, or Cathy, working at the circular desk at the Garden Entrance is VERY rude EVERY time!! She wants to straight ARGUE with patients and their families. My mom is dealing with cancer treatment. Hire "receptionists", because that is ALL she is, that have a little compassion. My next step is to contact corporate. So tired of being treated like this EVERY time.
UPDATE: The ladies at the Garden Center entrance, at the information desk, are some of the RUDEST ladies I have ever come in contact with. If I could give this hospital a negative rating, I would. Again, I had my mom here, for a biopsy, & the women working today, or any other day for that matter, have NO compassion. Kept wanting to "correct" & argue with my mother...the patient. I will be getting their names on the way out & contacting their supervisors. Unacceptable behavior for anyone in customer service, let alone when you are dealing with patients in a hospital setting.
My mom could barely walk because she was having so much lower back pain, so I took her to the ER. Well, nobody was having an emergency, obviously, because they checked people in, but took NOBODY back to be seen. We sat there for 4 HOURS!!, my mom in pain, before we gave up and left. And the staff was NO HELP! No update on wait times, no compassion...nothing. When we tried to ask, all the receptionist kept repeating is, "We're all full.", like she was told to tell...
