I went to Clem's on a cool but calm evening to check out the pier. The clerk was nice enough to let me walk around the pier before paying so I could decide if this was where I wanted to fish for the night. I noticed one fellow using live shrimp to catch small speckled trout nd that was good enough for me. I paid for myself and 2 rods which came to 6 bucks. A little pricey but what isn't these days? A found myself a good spot above one of their green lights and started chucking a spec rig from my ultralight rod and reel. Doubled up on the first cast, one dink spec and one dink sandy. This was an indication of how the rest of my night would go. I kept tossing the spec rig and catching a mix of dinky specs and sandys. This went on for several hours and I could have filled an ice chest with little sand trout I've I had wanted to do so. I started to get bored with the dinks so I tossed out my larger rod with a chunk of sand trout on the bottom. It wasn't long before I was reeling in a medium sized gaff top catfish. So for the next hour or so I was catching gaff tops and I could have filled another ice chest with those if I had wanted to. I never did catch anything good that night but I did break off some large at one point that I suspect was a drum. I also wore out a spec rig or two on all of the dink trout that I caught. Overall it was a fun night of fishing and it cost me no more than 10 bucks including the baits. I will return to Clem's on another calm night when I have nothing...

Read moreJust got off the phone with Clem's and they confirmed they will be open for business and have live shrimp readily available this Thanksgiving Day. It is a real relief knowing I called every other bait shop in the area and found none of them will be open for business this Thursday. Taking my two sons fishing and camping on Padre Island - new annual family tradition. Clem's may very well be our new choice for live bait from this point forward. Including our visit during our annual Casting for a Cause fishing tournament. Stay tuned. Fifth star coming pending...
