I went in to get shotgun shells like I normally do. My CA ID has the wrong address so I’ve been using my hunting license as proof of address. I’ve done this all year. For whatever reason today, they said they couldn’t do it. My federal duck stamp stuck to part of my license and I cleared most of it off. They claimed they couldn’t read it (could barely not see the last line), so I offered to scratch more of it off. They declined. CA law says I only need one proof of address and my hunting license works. My license should have been enough, especially when offered to make it clearer so it was readable. Big 5 is notorious for not training there staff on anything related to hunting items. Shells and even licenses. I took my dad in and had to tell the cashier what he needed and arguing that those things were purchasable. I work at a hunter check station and hunters constantly come in missing items. I don’t claim to know everything, but I know the law. I’ve been able to get shells just fine until today (which I assume the main person in charge of ammo was not in). Big 5 is not hunter friendly. I like to support local businesses, but I will be going to Sac for actual hunting stores because they know what they are doing. You lose money when your staff does not know how these things work. Whether it be shells are hunting licenses. I know hunting is only a subsection of your store, but during the hunting season certain trainings should take place. I also train staff for this time of year and it’s frustrating turning hunters away because the store does not know what they are doing. I hope you will do better in the future so that others do not suffer from your staffs lack...

The store seems cramped and dated. It is crammed with racks and racks of workout clothes that no one seems to buy bc it's overpriced. Sure, signs on racks say Big Sale! but look closer and it's your basic brand name sports top for $45...etc etc).
The quality, choice, and pricing on sneakers (which we go through a ton of around here) is blah. Stuff here tends to be lower end and lasts about as long as sneakers from mega box stores.
I don't know how many times I've gone in, been surprised at price, and thought... nah I'll just get it on Amazon (yes I try to shop local, as this review shows, but it doesn't work out here) where I have more options, pricing is competitive, and returns are zero hassle.
Most staff is friendly, burnt out, and a bit clueless. Turnover seems high.
It's next door to Jack's...
Read moreWell, either I'm sketching out, or these employees seem to think everyone is there to rip them off. I'm just looking for some shoes same then I'm wanting to look at some gear, y'know, shirts n pants, and other things.. And as I'm doing my thing, I got this feeling that I'm being tailed. Sure enough, I did a double back through the clothing racks and here's this little guy going through the places if been through. But he was acting real cool, like I couldn't tell he was looking and counting every item and hook that I had looked at, trying to keep up and make sure I didn't take anything without paying. Ok, I guess it's a new loss prevention technique, because as I laid my stuff on the counter to pay he was there checking the times I had picked up. Its just kinda weird, but then, what isn't kinda...
