To preface this review, I am leaving 1 star because it requires that I leave a minimum of 1. If I could leave less, I would. I am a bit disappointed because my experiences with every other Sutter doctor have been wonderful. In fact, I am going to be leaving my PCP a glowing, 5-star review shortly. This review has nothing to do with Dr. Hu's knowledge or expertise. There are three factors that play into this review: (1) I feel like I was being fleeced by having to pay additional copays to effectuate the care plan we had previously discussed, (2) Dr. Hu's approach to the messaging portal and telephone calls, and (3) how Dr. Hu chose to communicate that approach.
To my first point, during the two appointments I had with Dr. Hu, we discussed how we would approach my care plan. That approach consisted of a primary plan and two backup plans. The primary plan was for me to take âmedication Aâ because that was required to try before being able to qualify for âmedication B.â I took medication A, and I could not function on that medication. The first backup plan was for her to prescribe medication B if medication A did not work. However, we created a second backup plan, which was to prescribe âmedication Câ if insurance rejected the request for medication B (which it did). When the primary plan did not work because I could not function while taking medication A, Dr. Huâs staff reached out using the messaging portal to schedule a follow-up visit on what we would do next.
I called them in reply to their message and indicated that, in lieu of another appointment, we should follow the care plan that we discussed in my prior appointment (which included pursuing medication B and, if that was rejected, medication C). After a telephone call and some back and forth, the doctorâs office decided to follow the plan and prescribe medication B. My insurance rejected that request. I received another call to schedule a follow-up visit, and I asked about following the plan again (i.e., going with medication C). Ultimately, instead of following the plan, we had a follow-up visit because, as of three months after the initial plan was created, I still had had not received what we had discussed (again, for insurance reasons, which is not the basis for this poor review).
It was at that follow-up appointment that Dr. Hu communicated her approach to the messaging portal to me, which I found extremely off-putting. After the pleasantries of âHow are you?,â but before getting into the substance of the appointment, Dr. Hu had a little bit of âhousekeepingâ to address. She personalized it to me as well, which made it feel all the more icky. âYouâre an [insert my profession here], right?â She began. âIn your career, you donât like working for free.â A bold and incorrect assumption because volunteering and public service are a part of my career. âI also donât like working for free, so please do not ask for care or advice through our messaging portal or via phone with my staff. If you do, I think we need to revisit our doctorâpatient relationship, go back to your PCP, and get you a referral to a different doctor.â Excuse me, what? She allowed me no moments to reply or interject. If not to message your doctor, what is the point of the portal? Especially because I had asked that we do what we had already talked about. That should not require an additional visit or copay. I was in shock, dumbfounded, and disgustedâI could not get off that video visit fast enough.
The outcome of the visit was to reprise steps 2 and 3 of our original plan (namely medications B and C, in that order). She also requested that we have, and had her staff schedule, a follow-up visit in a month, which, again, did not make sense given that we had a plan and a backup plan. Why would we need to have a follow-up appointment when she could just do what she said she would do?
I have since cancelled all future appointments with Dr. Hu and am seeing a different neurologist.
Would not recommend.

Read moreI have been having an issue with dizziness since 2012. I had an MRI and nothing was found. I went to see an Neurologist in Berkeley and was told it was all in my head that I was dizzy. I recently went to see an ENT doctor who also informed me that it was possibly vertigo. My primary care doctor referred me to Dr. Hu. I cancelled one appointment because I didn't want to drive 30 minutes from Vallejo to Davis. I finally made another appointment and am so happy I did! Dr. Hu was very very thorough and she ran some tests in her office. Then she had me walking the halls of in their medical center and low and behold, she was able to diagnosis me! I wish I had found...
Read moreShe performed a nerve conduction study on me due to left side body weakness and tremors. My left arm was tremoring during the study as it has for years. When she was testing that area she kept telling me to relax even though I explained to her multiple times that I was relaxed and the shaking was involuntary. She moved on without saying anything and when I reviewed her after visit notes, she concluded the results âwere normalâ despite not being able to complete one portion due to the âpatient being unable to relaxâ. I sent a message asking for clarification because I was confused and was not given any clear explanation. I left...
