I had heard about this little tienda, but didn't have specific directions. I finally found it, just drive east on Main until you see Loves on the right, then you will see Tienda Mexicana la Villita.
It's an unassuming little spot full of treasures. They have fresh produce which comes in weekly, and they have cooked foods that come in on the weekend. I am particular was looking for tamales, and they said they would have pork with green sauce, pork with red sauce, chicken with green sauce, and my eyes kind of glazed over and I didn't hear the rest of what he said! I will be there at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday for some pork tamales!
They had a meat counter with several different types of meat prepared specifically for certain Mexican dishes. I was unprepared to decide what I might try today, but next time, after the tamales, I'm going to try something else.
I bought a small tres leches cake, some limes as fresh or fresher than those anywhere else for the same or a lower price, and several votive candles. They had pan dulce, which was very tempting, but tres leches cake is very rich! So I'll get pan dulce next time.
So far I have three more trips planned, and I'm so grateful that our community is willing to support a specialty grocery that serves a greater proportion of the population than most are aware.
I've added no photos, as the photos they have posted to represent their store are very good. I will post a photo of the front so that it will be more easily recognizable to a first...
