Fall Creek Falls State Park is best known for it's namesake falls, the highest waterfall in the eastern United States at 256 feet. The park itself covers 20,000 acres across the eastern top of the Cumberland Plateau in Bledsoe and Van Buren counties. It includes several waterfalls in addition to the main falls, along with cascades, gorges, and beautiful oak, hickory, tulip poplar, and hemlock forests. One of the park's most popular trails, is a trail that leads to the base of Fall Creek Falls.

Entering Fall Creek Falls State Park, you'll drive along winding, scenic roadways that take you past various overlooks of the gorge, as well as Fall Creek Lake.

On arriving at the parking area to the base trail, you'll find a sign indicating that you have reached the trail leading to the overlook and base of the falls. Further up are bathroom facilities on your left, along with picnic tables so that depending on your arrival time, you can have lunch if you would like before descending to the base of the falls.

At the Falls Overlook, you can see that the waterfall plunge into the base of the gorge and during high flow conditions, another falls... Coon Creek Falls appears though it wasn't present the day of our visit.

To the left of the overlook, begins the 0.4 mile steep trail to the plunge pool at the base of the falls. Most of the trail along the descent has a handrail and stairs are present, though there are extremely rocky areas where you may have to hop from one to another. The trail is suitable for small children and even pets on a leash. I would advise to simply take your time and take regular breaks along the way.

On reaching the bottom of the gorge, the trail continues along the steep rock walls and in areas, you get a feeling of natural air conditioning from the air moving out from between the large cracks in the wall.

As you approach the trail's end, Fall Creek Falls can be seen from an opening in the trees before opening up to a final short descent to the pool at the base of the falls. From here, there are generally a fair number of hikers sitting on the rocks or wading in the pool, cooling off by the thick mist.

Make sure to take a good long break and get a drink \ snack before turning around and heading back up to the parking lot. The return trip is steep and generally more tiring than the trip down. When we were done, I asked the kids which of the falls we've visited was their favorite and they were all in agreement that Fall Creek was...

Very beautiful park with lots of trails and waterfalls, but we were blindsided on the campground. Our spot in campground A (A22) was so steep we almost left once we saw it. The campground is beautifully lined with trees, but unfortunately the trees caused severe damage to our travel trailer when we were trying to back in our spot. Cutting back some of the trees that line the driving path would help with that. Although our site was listed as "back-in" we did see (after finally getting in our spot with the help of two other nearby campers who also told us about their horrible time trying to get in their sites) that there was a gravel drive behind our site, which would have made our trip much better if we had been told that our site was actually a pull-through. Big mistake on the part of the park for not listing it properly on their website. Also, I called before we left to make sure the site would accommodate our camper and the person I spoke with unequivocally stated that we would be fine and that the site was a back-in...Now, we get to plan on how to get the damage repaired that was caused by the tree while trying to back...

Its very hard to tell anyone how magnificent Fall Creek Falls is. The namesake of the park is stunning. Being the largest waterfall East of the Mississippi, its certainly a site to see. For those who aren't hiking enthusiast, the falls has an overlook you can walk a very short walk to. However, if you plan to go to the bottom of the falls, be prepared for a huff! Its a very easy hike going down (of course, going down a mountain is always easier). However, coming up it becomes strenuous. However, the hike also includes the base of the falls and you can swim down there. It's absolutely beautiful. While you're in the park, I suggest checking out the other waterfalls, as well. Cascade Falls is right behind the nature center. There are stairs that climb down to it. You can, also, swim in that waterfall. Downstream from Cascade Falls is Cane Creek Falls. There's a trail that leads to the base of Cane Creek Falls, however it is basically level 1 rock climbing. Its called the Cable Trail. I think its definitely worth it if you are an...

I was not ready for the beauty of this waterfall 😍Save for your next Tennessee road trip!! 📍Fall Creek Falls (Gorge Overlook Trail) 🏔 3.1 miles Loop 🐕‍🦺 Dog Friendly 🥾 Moderate Intensity Real talk: The day I did this waterfall I was almost a week into my road trip and I was TIRED. I had spent many days in the car, sleeping on the ground, and hiking numerous miles. I almost didn’t do this, but I am SO glad I got my butt in gear. I had this waterfall all to myself until 9 am. I woke up early and started right away so I could beat the crowds. This state park is super popular so if you want a peaceful experience, definitely hit the trail at dawn. P.S. there is a parking lot right before the descent down to the waterfall that shaves off a significant portion of this trail. Great for families or people who require more accessibility.
