Experience the Magic of Virge Yoga: Exceptional Classes, a Vibrant Community, and Unmatched Studio Experience.
I have been living in Durham for 7 years now, and I am happy to say that I have finally found my home studio! Virge Yoga truly has it all: amazing teachers, warm and joyful studio vibes, a strong sense of community, no judgment, a light-hearted approach to yoga, class diversity, cleanliness, cold essential oil-infused towels for the end of class, great prices, ample free parking, many props, high-quality mat rentals (Liforme), a water fountain, a spacious private bathroom, huge light-capturing windows with views of downtown, and pretty plants⦠and thatās just off the top of my head.
In terms of the specific classes I have thoroughly enjoyed, I have to start with Joanās Gentle Vinyasa. It is hands down the best yoga class Iāve been to in Durham. She gives an appropriate amount of helpful cues while leaving space for you to explore the postures. With intelligently crafted sequences and a peaceful yet powerful presence, she teaches in a way that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and supported. As someone with 11 years of practice and 9 years of teaching experience, I can confidently say that the quality of yoga instruction is unparalleled, and despite being a skilled practitioner with over 450 YTT hours, I always learn something new in her classes.
Moving to the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of class rhythm and vigorousness, Sculpt Vinyasa will give you that excitement of doing something new, challenging, and playful. Lori has a really positive and lively energy, and she will keep you motivated and focused! This is the perfect class if you're looking to get an amazing workout in, add more fun to your life, and be challenged in a non-judgmental, safe, and playful environment. The joy in the class is palpable and the sense of community is strong, making you feel like you're part of a collective effort to improve while not taking yourself too seriously. Also, this is a truly all-levels class, offering options ranging from slow and simple movements to high-intensity, fast-paced exercises.
Power Vinyasa is a creative, challenging, focus-inducing, and strength- and stamina-building class. Jodi's class was super fun and stimulating, keeping me on my toes. She makes you feel encouraged and strong, without all the stifling seriousness I have experienced in advanced classes at other studios. I left feeling powerful, rooted, accomplished, and strong. It was the perfect way to start my day!
The studio boasts plenty of workshops and community events. Virge also plays an integral part in my mental health, as well as my physical well-being. I guarantee you will leave feeling refreshed and grounded. I honestly have no complaints. Donāt miss out on this gemādo yourself a favor and book a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've practiced yoga on and off for about ten years, joined Virge in April, and after 50+ classes with them I can honestly say I'm very glad to have found this studio to regularly practice at.
The studio is currently at the former Durham Yoga Company. Parking is easy to find. There are mirrors on one wall, windows on another. You can pick your spot to see your reflection in the mirror or not. High quality props (Liforme mats for rental), and a wonderfully cool towel infused with essential oil at the end of every class. They have plans to move to the Durham ID building in the near futute.
The classes: currently there are about 2-4 classes every day. Most classes are heated, except for the Gentle classes and one Power class. There's something for everyone here. Gentle classes are, well, gentle, but very well-guided, nourishing, and restorative. Power Yoga is probably the most "advanced" class but there are always reminders to listen to your body, and plenty of modifications offered. Sculpt is more a Yoga meet HIIT style that will definitely give you a workout. Power Yoga with Joan or Jodi, and Sculpt with Lori are my three favorites.
The vibe and community: The owners/ teachers are all super friendly. They organize events fairly frequent both in the studio (Beer sampling after Wednesday sculpt!) and in the community (at the farmers market, after Run Clubs, etc.
Last but not least, and this might be strange, but I feel very comfortable to be myself practicing here. Sometimes in yoga I can struggle with body dysmorphia and be overly critical of my appearance. I don't know why, but I have never really had any such moments here, and that's something I truly appreciate.
This has been such a great addition to the Bull City, and I hope they will stay for a...
Read moreUpdate: I have never done this but⦠This is actually my second time writing a review for this studio-because after a full year of going, I can feel the difference in my body, mind, and heart. I feel stronger, more grounded, and more connected to myself because of this place.
Every instructor brings their own strength and energy to class, always pushing you in the best way while reminding you to listen to your body and do what feels right. It's empowering and supportive all at once. The class variety keeps things fresh (shoutout to sculpt, power, mat Pilates, gentle and vinyasa flow-yes, I've tried them all!). And don't even get me started on the themed classes--think curated playlists that make you smile, dance a little, and forget for a second that you're dripping sweat in the middle of a seriously challenging workout. It's fun, playful, and still totally focused-such a unique balance.
What really makes this place special, though, is the community. It's clear they're rooted in Durham and celebrate it with intention-and everyone, truly everyone, is welcome here. The space itself feels like a second home tucked right into downtown. Whether you're just getting started or deep into your practice, all ages and levels will find something to love here
Old review: What I love about Virge is the variety of clases they offer-I can focus on grounding, balance, flexibility, mobility, strength, and stamina all in one place! Virge is also unique in that itās a place that prioritizes community. You can show up to work out and you can stay and make friends and connections and share joy. I always feel great after a workout with these amazing folks. Iām so happy Virge is here and I look forward to what will be offered at the new location...
