Update: I had hoped more from the owner’s response than a complete write off. She had several opportunities to acknowledge our mistake with grace and treat us like a valued customer. Afterwards we never got a phone call, no effort on her part. Our mistake annoyed her. I waited a few days before posting to allow her the opportunity. I also think it’s strange that she threatened to “out” me and post personal information online, that seems definitely uncalled for. I double checked all the communications, no emails or confirmations describe their policy regarding the pick up window charge, in our defense. They should definitely make it clear in confirmation emails since its so ”vital” to their operations. It is on the website, but I clearly missed that. Again, had she explained the policy with some grace when we got there instead of writing us off, probably would have helped, since the fee isn’t really the issue, it’s how we were treated. And if she claims the fee is nominal, why did she charge it? Isn’t customer satisfaction the point? “hey buddy, we’ll take care of that fee this time, but make sure to come at that specific pick up time next time to help us” is all it would have taken, this really is beginner level customer service. Sadly there won’t be a next time.

We came across this place a few years ago during our first camping trip to the UP. As a lifelong camper, skier, paddler - what an awesome little local paddle shop. We've come back every year since and this is always a must stop. Finding such a cool little shop that is so uniquely and passionately stocked and operated in the small town of Empire makes it all the more charming and genuine. We've lived in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Colorado and now back to Chicago and this is probably my favorite small business I've ever come across. A cool story about the reach of SBS- my girlfriend and I were out to lunch (Lonesome Rose here in Chicago) and I was wearing an SBS tee. I am forever grateful for the @sleepingbearsurf family. Regan joined their Jr. Waterman camp in Aug, and it was beyond amazing! He learned water safety, learning to surf, paddle board, track weather patterns and build confidence as well as mental strength to overcome challenges. They even did a beach cleanup, learning to care for the places we love!

Being able to surf on the big lake was a dream come true moment, for sure. He was challenged in the best ways, and he learned sooo much.

I love that he was taken out of his comfort zone on multiple occasions but still wants more. As we drove home on his last day, he said he learned that being uncomfortable is important to learning new things and growing. ❤️ the @sleepingbearsurf family so much! Highly, highly...
