It's interesting to read the negative reviews. Mostly about getting to the tee box and interaction with the Starter. Don't show up 10 minutes before your tee time to check in and expect the ProShop or Starter staff to roll out the red carpet. The REASON this course get's so much play is their ability to consistently maintain reasonable PACE of Play. Anyone who plays golf regularly understands the importance. IF you delay and negatively impact PACE of PLAY, you are impacting EVERYONE behind you.
Like any golf course, there is on going maintenance. Thunderstorms roll in, trees are struck by lightning, erosion occurs and some people simply abuse the course with damage to tee boxes and greens.
This is NOT a municipal course, it's semi-private meaning they offer memberships and public play. It's a Donald Ross classic on the front and George Cobb back (think Quail Hollow).
The GPS on the carts are designed to keep traffic OFF the main playing area and as close to the Cart Path as possible. There is geofencing and you can see the Yellow outline on the GPS screen so it's not the courses fault if you stray into a restricted area. This is TRUE for every course who has cart GPS.
The driving range closes EVERY Wednesday at various times for picking balls and maintenance of the range and the Range Servant machine. Call in ADVANCE to find out if it's closed for maintenance OR if you're hitting off mats or grass. NO driving range has grass that will allow daily hitting off the turf. That's why they have the turf mats to allow regular play.
For those that COMPLAIN about the problems with pricing, DON"T book using a third party service and expect the staff in the ProShop Club House to honor the rate. That's on you for not calling ahead to confirm the rate.
This is a POPULAR course because of the location and the lack of similar golf options in the area. The Town of Fort Mill has DOUBLED in size from 2018 to 2025, now at nearly 30K people. Golfers from CLT drive South to play it. Charlotte now has a population of nearly 1 Million. So yeah, it's going to be busy. As a course MEMBER you're allowed to book TWO weeks in advance. As a NON-MEMBER, book one week in advance. IF you can't get the tee time at the day/time you want, set your ALARM for midnight, get on your computer...

Updated Review 8/22
While the course continues to be one of the nicer ones in the area, I don’t believe that I will be back. The staff is just too rude and too incompetent. This does not apply to the guys in the pro shop, only the starters. There is a negative interaction before or during your round almost every time out there. We were asked who the hell are you guys? Had tee times delayed, and also dealt with one starter who flew down the hill to make sure we knew that we had to check in with him first. (He was nowhere to be seen for 15 minutes before). “Next time remember, you wait for me.” He could have been in the bathroom for all we know. It’s not our responsibility to miss our tee time when there is no starter around. I know most of these guys are retired and do it for the free golf. Maybe it’s time to move on. With all the other great choices in the area -Waterford, Tega Cay, Springfield, etc I think I will be. Very disappointed. Delayed writing this review, but enough is enough. The starters have ruined it for me and I spread the word...
Read moreFort Mill Golf Club has a decent course layout and has solid practice facilities even though you hit off mats mostly. The course is not hard, but does have challenging holes. The greens are normally well kept but slow compared to others in the area.
Hole 2 is one of my favorite in the area because of the risk/reward and how the water on the right and large tree on the left force you to make a great drive.
Hole 12 is my least favorite in all of Charlotte for its lack of a decent landing area anywhere on the hole.
Unfortunately, the cart GPS system seriously takes away from the experience.
The GPS system is overly restrictive and frustrating. The carts often stop abruptly and force you to reverse to blaring beeping, even in spots that aren’t near greens or any sensitive areas. Many holes run side by side, and you should be able to access your ball quickly, but the GPS won't let you. It slows down play considerably.
I understand protecting the course is important, but the way this system is set up just doesn’t make sense. It creates longer rounds and leaves players annoyed. I've experienced this on multiple visits this year, and I’ve heard the same feedback...
