OK, OK, I know that when I review I tend to use a lot of superlatives in my copy, however this time I don't even have enough to describe the aboslute museum quality of this establishment's Native American jewelry and artwork. It represents one of the finest collections for sale anywhere in the world as well as the sum total of several generations of the Garland family's passionate pursuits. Native American blankets, rugs, jewelry, pottery, and artwork are what they love. This is why several of the Garland family members are considered world-reknown experts in their individual fields.
The Garlands have dozens and dozens of Native American families that they call personal friends. As you look at some of the simply astounding masterpieces in this store's jewelry cases, you'll see that each artist is mentioned by name. All of their jewelry pieces are collector pieces. They have no un-named bracelets or necklaces unless they are old pawn. Even then. many of the original designers and artisans have been tracked down so that the authenticity of individual jewelry can be verified and provenance known.
This collection is also a museum in the sense that it is constantly changing as the artwork sells, however it is constantly replacing itself with equally-fine pieces from present day Native American masters who call the Garlands by first name and basically sell only to them and a few other close store-owner friends.
I worked in this field for about 15 years, taking high-quality Native American jewelry to Marshall Field's in Chicago as well as to a few high quality stores in Aspen. My main field of interest became raw materials and I sold most of my finest Lapis Lazuli, Red Mediterranean Coral, and select Bisbee and Morenci Turquoise to Charles Loloma, the master Hopi jeweler. During this time I met Dan Garland and a few other members of their clan. A friend of mine knew them very well and introduced me in the hopes that we coud do business together. Though we never did, I use every opportunity in my travels to mention their stores to anyone looking for the purest, finest Native American jewelry or Navajo rugs to be found anywhere. By golly, I guess I'm doing that now.
If you stop in you will be immediately surprised at how quiet and somewhat formal the atmosphere is in the store. This is not the place to look for less expensive "tourist" treasures or simple gifts. There is nothing inexpensive in this store and rightly so because everything you'll see is a treasure waiting to be owned by someone who knows what perfection means. Dang, there I go again with the...
Read more100% Authentic and Awesome describes my experience with Dan Garland and his team. I wanted to make sure I purchased pieces that really represented my Sedona experience, and for me, that meant paying close attention to where things were made, and by whom. At Garland's, I knew this wouldn't be an issue. And the purchases I made were accompanied by what appeared to be an inventory type listing, straight off their system with the name of the Navajo artist listed. Everything in the store is above average. Plan on spending time to learn about the pieces? They are truly works of art, and the staff is eager to share once they realize you truly are interested. Unless I can look in the eye of an artist actually making native american jewelry, I will never buy from anywhere other than Garland's. Can't wait to...
Read moreI have purchased many pieces of turquoise jewelry from Garlands online, and it has been nothing but a satisfying experience. One of my favorites is a Tyrone turquoise ring that I purchased from Garlands, by artist Noah Pfeffer. Garlands is a reputable seller. They are always upfront about whether a turquoise piece is natural or stabilized. Most of their stuff is natural and untreated. I appreciate their honesty, and as a serious buyer of natural turquoise jewelry, I trust them for all my turquoise purchases. As well, Thomas who works for Garlands is a most considerate and sincere gentleman. He was very communicative and responsive to my questions. Most of the jewelry at Garlands is also designed and created by Navaho artists. That is...
