I can recommend this hike. I don't know how many times I've hiked to the top of this mountain, but it's been a lot. I've only hiked to the top of this thing via the trails leaving from Chautauqua Park. The trails from Chautauqua Park are mostly shady and oftentimes lush by Front Range Colorado standards. There is a lot of healthy poison ivy growing along the sides of the trails (particularly in 2021), so know what it looks like before you go. It usually takes me between 2 1/2 to 3 hours to get to the top and back. Though a challenging hike in my opinion, challenging hikes are not particularly intimidating to the often ultra fit population living in and around Boulder, so this is a very popular hike as a consequence because of its convenience. Having at least moderate levels of fitness makes this hike a lot more pleasant, but more than just the fitness elite make it to the top of this thing. The view at the top makes the hike worth it. To get to the very top, you need to climb on top of some boulders at the summit which offer limited space to stand and sit. There can be a line to stand and sit on top of the boulders, particularly tourists who want a picture of themselves on top of the mountain. You can tell who the locals are that hike or run to the top for fitness. Once the trail stops going up, they unceremoniously turn around and go back to...
Read moreTook the Ampitheatre Trail to the top (01/14/2022). Super steep at the start and very icy. Spikes are highly recommended during winter. The views of the front range and Boulder gradually start opening up after the first 20 mins or so. There's a ladder crossing halfway up which is rather cool too. The second half of the trail isn't as steep and I thoroughly enjoyed this half than the first.
Overall, made it to the summit in around 1 hr. Lots of people and dogs up there. You can scramble to the top of a little rock up there to get a great view and also see the marker.
Descended the Ranger trail to the Gregory canyon trail back to the Gregory canyon trailhead. Super icy and slick at spots but manageable. Less steep but longer than the east trail. Enjoyed the hike overall. Great workout. (Total 5.11 miles RT, 2400 ft gain,...
Read moreExcellent hike--picturesque and rigorous. From Gregory Canyon trail head, I highly recommend Amphitheater approach rather than Gregory Canyon, especially on a hot day. The steep middle section of GC is mostly unshaded; you will suffer if the day's at all warm. Amphitheater is steeper than GC, especially at the beginning--first 45 minutes a grunt and gets you past the most sustained section--but it's within forest almost the entire way to summit. I descended via Gregory on a hot day, and even the dogs seemed bothered, their people staggering up behind. Seeing people desperately slurping their doggies' water from scarred plastic bowls because they hadn't sufficiently provisioned for their own needs was discouraging. (Amphitheater is trail to the left from parking circle, with a foot bridge right...
