Chautauqua is a must hike when visiting Boulder, I’ve been 3 times and have hiked 3 different trails and all have been very rewarding, Bluebells and the “numbered” trails are moderate approachable trails, Royal Arch is a challenge with a lot of fast elevation gain in the style of a “stairstepper”. But completely worth the challenge for the views and beautiful rock formation. If attempting Royal Arch start early, like right at the break of dawn to ensure yourself some solitude, it is a very popular busy set of trails so earlier is better to beat the crowds (it’s still crowded even on weekdays during normal working hours). Hiking poles would make for an easier hike, I did Royal Arch without them tho. Expect to scramble just a tiny bit in a couple places right after Sentinel Pass, you have to use your hands to support yourself to get down a couple boulders, nothing crazy. Can’t stress enough the beauty of the expansive view on top of Royal Arch. Go for it and enjoy the memory that you will make, and the leg workout! (Remember uphill hikers have the right of way, so yield to them once you turn around on...
Read more10/2/21 - To get here go to, Chautauqua Trail, Boulder is a 1.2-mile out-and-back path. Lots of people come here. Parking is hard to find. Download the app (Park Meter), on the weekend it says you have to pay but it’s free!!!
Third Flatiron is just one of them, there’s probably 8th Flatiron. You will end up on the base of the 3rd flatiron if you do the moderate loop. Look on your right, left, up to see all the views. Going up from the parking lot is incline, if it is your first time hiking a bit difficult but you can stop and go. To get to the ROYAL ARCH, you must hike, but it’s closed (will probably open next spring). Still worth a hike. It doesn’t matter which one you pick it will bring you back down close to the parking lot. More views and more challenging do the moderate, you are...
Read moreHiking at Chataqua is a real treat. The views are spectacular, and the trail itself is challenging, but not long enough that I have to commit a full day to hiking. If you like to boulder, the Satellites are right along the path to the third flatiron. The only reason this doesn't get the full 5 stars is because of the crowd. Plan to get there EARLY on a weekend, or else you won't...
