Horizon Supermarket — Local services in Freeport

I'd driven by Horizon Supermarket for years with a certain amount of pride and wonder. One, it's the only(correct me if wrong) walking-distance grocer for the surrounding neighborhood and two, just marveling that a former A&W dog n' suds joint could be converted into anything else. A couple of days ago, finally stopped in for something to drink and a look inside. I like it. A convenience store striving to provide something a little more to the community. The typical refrigerated wall coolers of beverages and glassed in cashier station but friendlier feeling somehow. I was surprised to find the sparkling little deli counter for freshly sliced meat and cheese, etc. Have fond memories of visiting w/ my family back in the 70's for chili dogs and root beer. It just felt good to be there again and see the building's still being made...

I have to say that this place probably has the best subs around. We came down for Michigan for a little while and the two gentlemen that work in the back in the deli section are awesome. Always seem to make the day better when my girlfriend and I went back there to grab ourselves some food. Unfortunately we had to head back to Michigan but if I ever find myself down that way again you better believe I'll be stopping in to grab them subs. We actually stopped there on our way out. Goodbyes are so hard!
