Tucked along the Pecatonica River, not far from the mighty Mississippi river ever rushing toward its final destination from its birthplace in the American Northwoods prairie states, a small gem quietly awaits discovery. Freeport city is in the Illinois state county of Stephenson. A handsome stone mansion, located on grounds that were once the Victorian home and arbotetum belonging to the local Taylor family, now graciously houses Freeport"s truly American story of midwestern grit, genius, and business acumen. Here are invaluable collections of treasured American-made goods, products that we fondly remember. They are remembered world-wide, even today.

Spirits of Yesteryear Oct. 26th 2024 was a Halloween event to die for. I truly hope this becomes a yearly event again! It was a great evening to listen to some scary stories and to explore a truly haunted house.

Our guide was very knowledgeable, humorous and pleasant. We had our 8 month old done with us and he was very accommodating talking to him as he babbled and including him in the tour as well.

Was visiting relatives in Winnebago and visited this museum one afternoon when we were trying to fill time. Glad we did. This is a hidden gem. The house is wonderful but the industrial/farming museum section was the most fascinating for me. They also have a one room school house and a 1830s log cabin. All very well documented and the tour guide was very good. Definitely recommend this site if...

Who says history is boring? I love this place. The old Taylor house is beautiful and, despite all the educational placards, feels just as mysterious to me now as when I was a kid. The kind of thing that brings me back time and again. Also enjoy meandering through the stately trees of the arboretum, visiting the gazebo and the sun...
