For our anniversary, my father-in-law was given a very clear assignment by his wife: buy us a gift card for a fancy dinner. Something classy. Maybe a place with cloth napkins and a wine list that requires a translator.
Instead, he emailed us a gift card to Granny’s Confections in Howell, Michigan.
We live on the West Coast. We’ve never been to Michigan. We had no idea what Granny’s Confections was. For a moment, we thought he’d accidentally bought us credit toward a bake sale at a retirement home. The confusion was real, and the laughter was loud.
Once the laughter settled, we figured, why not? We placed an online order for Pecan Brittle, Pecan Popcorn Infusions, and Cashew Popcorn Infusions. The snacks were decent. Not life-changing, but enjoyable enough to make the whole experience worth it.
We didn’t get the fancy dinner, but we got something better. A hilarious story, some decent snacks, and a reminder that gift-giving is always an adventure.
