I attended this school for five years, from 4th grade to 8th grade. I am here to share my honest review of the school. The education provided by the school is average, nothing out of the ordinary for a regular middle school. The school has limited course selections, and the students are offered only three electives: German (for 7th and 8th graders), Orchestra, and Band. The music department also offers some sub-electives such as jazz ensemble. In summary, the school's education is very standard, and the options for elective courses are few. I would rate it 6.5 out of 10.
During my time in the school, the teachers in 4th and 5th grade were relatively well-prepared and good at teaching. However, in the older grades, some teachers showed a large amount of neglect, lack of empathy, and warmth that you would expect from teachers. The school has a high employee turnover rate, and most teachers leave after only one or two years of teaching at the school. You won't be able to form a long-term connection with many teachers, as they are likely to leave before you graduate. I am disappointed to say that some of the teachers were unprofessional, inappropriate with students, and sexist. I remember a time when a teacher, Mr. Jonakin, tickled another student, and I was disgusted. Teachers often singled out students who got questions wrong and forced them to present themselves spontaneously in front of the class (not for big assignments, just for little incidents every now and then). They also used inappropriate language around young audiences.
When bullying was reported to teachers, there were only three responses they could give. First, they would simply call you a tattletale (this happened to me on multiple occasions). Second, they would say they would address the situation but never do. The third option, which was the rarest, was when they would address the situation, discipline all parties involved, and conduct a proper investigation. If you have a male child and want to send them to this school, please note that they will always be treated differently from female students. I have counted several different incidents where a female student reported an exaggerated or false incident, and nine times out of ten, action was taken against a male student without a proper investigation. Female students were often favored over male students when it came to turning in assignments late, disciplinary actions, and the way students were treated in general. Despite this, there were many great teachers I can remember who did not show this behavior, and I recall loving the custodial staff. Overall, I would rate the school...
Read moreAs a concerned parent, it is with disappointment that I share my experience with Glen Hills Middle School. Once highly regarded in the Glendale area, it seems that the school has fallen from its peak and failed to meet the standards expected of a quality educational institution.
One of the most concerning aspects is the lack of communication between teachers and parents regarding students' progress. I have observed instances where teachers are not effectively engaging with students, leading to a lack of academic progress. It is disheartening to see a lack of support for students falling behind in their studies, with no detention, homework recovery classes, or tutoring available to assist them.
Furthermore, the absence of a well-developed special education program and trained professionals to support students with diverse learning needs is a significant oversight. Teachers appear disengaged and demotivated, which reflects in their teaching approach and negatively impacts the quality of education provided.
Moreover, there are apparent issues with the misuse and abuse of funds allocated to the school. This mismanagement raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the school's administration. Additionally, the lack of discipline regarding students' inappropriate behavior, including dress code violations, is concerning. The absence of effective communication with parents on these matters only exacerbates the problem.
The heavy reliance on computer-based learning without adequate access to textbooks raises concerns about the quality of education being delivered. It is crucial for a school to provide a well-rounded education that includes traditional teaching methods and resources.
In conclusion, Glen Hills Middle School appears to be facing significant challenges in maintaining its educational standards and fostering a conducive learning environment. As a parent, I urge the school administration to address these issues promptly and strive towards creating a positive and supportive educational experience for...
Read moreI went here as a kid from a neglectful home and I still have random flashes of care from all the staff that were so wonderful and went out of their way to mentor me and support me in so many ways. They also took such good care of my autistic brother, he still wants to come and walk by the school sometimes because he felt so safe and supported by the incredible staff here. I see a lot of posts of bullying. As someone who had to transfer out of Glen hills and go to a public school in a city, it is the smallest potatoes. At Glen Hills, kids were mean and ostracizing as middle schoolers will be, but a lot of other schools have actual violence, drugs, gangs even in 8th grade. Parents create bullies, teachers can't suspend everyone and honestly a handful of kids are probably just as much terrors to the teachers as kids. Some judge-y, upperclass, mostly white Wisconsinites living in Glendale model for their children how to treat others. Where do you think the kids got it from? If we as adults are being hateful and exclusionary at home, why would our kids act differently? I remember kids had Abercrombie and Fitch and holister and if you didn't have it, they wouldn't talk to you. Like how would the teachers fix that? I mean teachers can't watch everyone and thought police them 24/7. I ate lunch with the librarian or my current favorite teacher because they took the time and allowed me, they could've said it's my break, go away, whatever. If you can't teach your kids how to cope here, they're going to have a hell of a time in highschool. I hope some of the same teachers are still here. I felt extremely sheltered here comparatively. This was over fifteen...
