Very unusual and interesting guitar store inexplicably tucked away in a rural small town in East Texas. It is absolutely jammed with all manner of guitars and guitar-related gear, most of which appears to be used/vintage. In addition to functional guitars of every brand and description, there are numerous guitars in various states of disassembly and disrepair, many of them quality brands like Fender and Gibson (some of which were quite old). I found the place by accident when I was visiting the area, but it’s apparently known to more people than you might think, including at least one guitar hero (Eric Johnson, whose picture posing with store employees was displayed). The fellow who waited on me was very nice and even climbed on top of an amp to retrieve a guitar on a very high rack. Met Kelly, the owner, who was also friendly and helpful. One note of caution if you are serious about vintage guitars: This is the type of guitar store that you will want to spend a significant amount of time taking in. I only had about 30 minutes and that was not nearly...
Read moreKenneth Brackeen referred me to Action Sound. I called first to make sure they were open and to see how it felt. My Black Beauty is a Yamaha and I'm a strummer, not picker, and she had a worn down bridge, and had had all 6 keys replaced recently and left her sounding not like herself. I didn't know quite what to tell them-how to tell them what to do. I didn't need to. Kelly cut a bone and honed it so the B twang left, too, which was not my initial concern. I played it after he fixed it and I actually cried because it's the first time I'd played her in a while that she sounded so pretty-and that there were not marks on my guitar from him working on her. I enjoyed playing a mandolin and uke while waiting and Ryker (Richie) was fun to talk with about his motorcross mishaps and triumphs. I left feeling respected, and that my guitar was worth the same as an ancient Gibson. Action Sound was everything Kenneth said it...
Read moreThe neck broke on a rare and vintage electric guitar that I have owned for nearly forty years. Action Sound put it back together straight and seamlessly. It was astonishing. They also refurbished it. They tweaked the playability of another electric guitar I use. It had previously been given a "set up" at a music shop, by someone with a reputation as the best in Tyler. This relatively inexpensive guitar sounded as good as gold after Action Sound worked on it, and it played better than a vintage Stratocaster, in my opinion. The difference between the two setups was profound. The fee was less than in Tyler! I will not let anyone except the crew at Action Sound touch my guitars again. It is well worth the short drive to Hawkins to have genuine guitar luthiers handling my instruments. Both their quality and their reasonable fees surpass any guitar shop I know of. They also sell guitars, amplifiers, and...
