I found a red eared slider turtle that had got hit by a car and kept it overnight - i ended up bringing it in at 1 PM the next day...
As we arrived we saw that the door bell was broken with a sign above it that said it still worked and to press it - the doorbell is broken to where you have to stick your finger inside of a small hole - A staff member named Lauren shook her head as she approach the door and upon opening the door she educated us that we should only press the doorbell once. (Which came across very abrupt.) (i’m not claiming that she shook her head at us but it sure felt like it.) There was no one else in the office space & we asked lauren if we pressed it too many times and we did not receive an answer. She continued to walk to the back with the turtle. Another staff member walked out and sat at the desk - and we asked again: to this new staff member “did we ring the doorbell too many times” and she educated us that it rings automatically five times... so were feeling a bit flustered at this point.
Lauren returned, and we were quite upset that the turtles health was significantly depreciating and we were fully aware that we would not be able to come back to ask the status of the turtle: and made this known. I asked a simple question of “I have a question, do you think the turtle is blind? I know we cannot call back” - and i was rudely interrupted by Lauren before I could finish my question. I asked this question as it had significant eye damage (I’m sure if it was blind that it would not go back in the wild - so basically that answer would give me a better idea on if it will live)... she was looking me in my eyes very intently, and told me that she would not know and that we will not be able to call back to find out. Her tone of voice and demeanor was extremely offputting and rude. She stood tall with confidence and an offputting stare. It was not a friendly encounter at all. I rarely take the time to make a review, but this interaction was a major disappointment.
After she rudely interrupted me I made a point of telling the other staff member that she had been very rude to me and my mother, Lauren overheard and quickly wanted to correct her wrongdoings. She asked what she had done wrong and I told her that she rudely interrupted me and that none of the interaction felt supportive or genuine. She then apologized but the damage was done. I feel that she only apologized because her coworker was around.
I am very grateful for this wildlife center, I truly believe that the animals are taken care of here. I am only upset due to very poor customer service from a...
Read moreI found a bird that I suspected of being hit by a car on the road and brought it into the wildlife center at the Houston SPCA. I didn't think to ask her name but the woman who greeted me from the front desk upon entering was so lovely! She was upbeat despite the seemingly overwhelming amount of animals they intake everyday. She was kind and helpful to at least seven different people I saw come in while being there for only around 10 minutes. She was quick and efficient in triaging each animal, whilst maintaining such a welcoming demeanor the whole time. Even when people described things that they had done to "care for" the animal they brought in that wouldn't necessarily in line with best practice, She gave no indication of annoyance and didn't belittle them or make them feel like they did the wrong thing, she only thanked them for bringing the animal in. If you find an injured animal, look up the Houston SPCA wildlife centers website and follow their instructions on how to determine whether or not to bring the animal in. After doing so, if you have determined that they can help treat the animal, I would absolutely recommend bringing it into them! Again, they do care for hundreds of animals weekly and only have limited resources so if you do think you have found an animal that needs care, make sure it follows their guidelines before bringing it in or call and they can advise you. Also consider making a donation, even a few dollars, while...
Read moreThis center is the "Best" and part of the SPCA complex on Old Katy Road. Living in West Houston, the drive there is 30 minutes down I-10, exit Washington Ave., go left to Old Katy Road. You are immediately helped when you bring in an injured animal or bird. The form you complete is very short. You never hear what happens to the patient but I've learned from my Vet, who interned there from A&M, that when healed the patient, if safe, is released near where it is found. No fee is required, but you can put change or dollars in a box there or zap your credit card into one of 2 donation amount boxes. We have Muscovy ducks, born in our neighborhood, and both they and older ducks get injured. Today I took a teen duck that could not walk. No appointment is required. The whole facility takes in dogs, cats, horses and other farm types, and birds, possums, be careful with raccoons (rabies), unless a baby. You name it and they care for them. It takes a lot of money to provide care in this gorgeous facility. I give every month a small amount. If more did small amounts, what landslide of help! Go by for a visit....
