This supermarket is definitely a Vietnamese specialty store, offering an array of unique, hard-to-find Vietnamese items that make it stand out. They even have a small fast-food section serving barbecue and roasted duck, which is very convenient. If you’re looking for exotic fruits, this is the place to be.
My Hoa Food Market has been a staple in the community for years, but this was my first time visiting as the Chinese Lunar New Year approaches. The festive atmosphere is evident, with many people shopping for New Year essentials. One standout is the abundance of 菊花 (chrysanthemums) for sale, symbolizing prosperity and fortune. They’re fresh, vibrant, and easy to grab—perfect for celebrating the season.
However, the store does show its age—it’s not the cleanest or most modern place. The vegetable section seemed a bit sparse, possibly because I visited on a busy weekend. That said, you can find extremely affordable meats in certain sections, which is a great draw for budget-conscious shoppers.
For holiday treats or everyday ingredients, My Hoa is a treasure trove of Vietnamese snacks, Asian sauces, seafood, and meats. It’s a one-stop shop for anyone preparing traditional meals or exploring Vietnamese cuisine. The market also features some Vietnamese restaurants and a Hong Kong dessert shop nearby, adding to the overall experience.
While it’s not perfect, My Hoa Food Market is a great place to explore, especially during festive seasons. Whether you’re looking for unique ingredients, budget-friendly meats, or a taste of Vietnam, this market has...
Read moreI do like this Asian grocery store. I used to live right behind it for a year or so. Being that it is Vietnamese, they have several things that the other Asian supermarkets on Bellaire do not have. Vietnamese people and people from New Orleans share many of the same tastes, due to our shared history of French colonialism. For example, they have more varieties of coffee and chicory at this store, with rock bottom prices, than you will find anywhere outside of southern Louisiana. They also have amazing french bread, that I know is baked fresh daily, but I'm not sure that they bake it there. You can go to the fish market in the back, select the fish you want, and they will clean it and fry it for you, right then and there, for minimal added cost. They always have a huge variety of top notch produce, and their prices on most things are quite reasonable. I do find it hard to communicate with many of the people who work there. But they are always very kind, even though I'm usually the only white/Jewish guy in the store, (my girlfriend is Filipino). It is definitely worth checking out, for anyone who is not a close...
Read moreOk, it's not going to be for everyone. It's not exactly run like most supermarkets here. It looks a little disheveled and unkempt, but it really isn't. Then once you get past the fact that it's exactly that, just a supermarket, no esthetics, no new paint, floor is old and slightly cracked here and there linoleum from probably the 80's but the selection of meat, fish and poultry is second to none. I mean it's great quality, fresh and butchered THERE AT THE STORE, NOT PRE+PACKAGED meats! Then the prices! We bought a whole back strap compared to (same size unit) Randall's $160, Walmart $120, Fiesta $87..... We paid... .... .... $20.00, YES, THIS IS CORRECT!!!! We compared to the least expensive price range (some were after digital coupons) pound for pound. We bought duck wings for $3/Lb & got 2Lbs. Bigger than chicken wings, better tasting than chicken! I'm trying to tell you, this is one of H-Towns best kept secrets. Don't expect the Randall's or even Fiesta atmosphere, just expect the unexpected and you will have a greater appreciation for the My Hoa Food Market experience. Tell 'em...
