I stopped in here yesterday by pure chance and it was honestly a pleasant surprise to see this store. I was heading over to High Grounds next door for a coffee but since they were closed turned around to head back to my car and discovered this store. I walked in and the owners were the most friendly people and extremely welcoming, the selection of kitchen, cooking, baking, bar, etc supplies available was more then adequate and was perfect. I was actually able to find an Oxo brand whisk! Oxe is one of my favorite brands and they had an amazing selection. Also, more importantly the prices were extremely fair and the same as you'd find on Amazon. Like I was shocked, I checked a few different items to make sure I was crazy and sure enough they were all the same price (though this may not be true for everything as I did not price check everything) and for a store to be on par with Amazon for pricing for the same thing and I can get it today instead of waiting on a package from Amazon to come I'd rather buy local and I think everyone else will appreciate this as much as I do. Now onto the coffee they will be offering some pour over coffees from a roaster in Ames that roasts the beans fresh, though they hadn't gotten it set up when I was in I picked up a pound of the Congo single origin and I ground it up this morning and it was absolutely Devine, the price was only 16$ for a pound which is a great deal given you would be paying the same for only 12 ounces at other coffee shops . I would suggest everyone to stop in explore and pick up at least a pound of coffee and some cool kitchen gadgets, definitely will...
Read moreIowa City is very lucky to have The Prairie Kitchen Store. It’s a perfect place to get everything you might need for your kitchen…..bakeware, cookware, utensils, beautiful towels, potholders, aprons, breakfast, lunch, dinner service, spices, condiments, sauces…..the list goes on and on. If I ever need a gift, PKS is my first go to store…..the goods are quality items, most of which have been personally tested by the owners for functionality and value. Our family especially enjoys the wide variety of oil and vinegars available. One our favorites is the Meyer Lemon white balsamic vinegar…..adding just a splash to my salad dressing transforms a boring oil and vinegar dressing into a gourmet treat. This is the season for entertaining and now thanks to PKS, we own two Raclette machines which allow us to gather our large family for a special favorite cold weather meal. We also enjoy a beautiful cast iron fondue pot for festive gatherings of family and friends. I love that the staff at PKS is so knowledgeable and friendly…..always happy to take the time to answer questions and show differences in products they carry. Finally, I always feel good about supporting a family owned Iowa City business. One can tell that a lot of passion has gone into designing and planning this store. They also carry products from many local artisans, as well as offering local products like honey, hot sauces, and a variety of pickled items. I would suggest a holiday outing to stop in Prairie Kitchen Store, buy a coffee or drink to sip on while you shop and compare…..you...
Read moreI was walking along Linn Street towards RSVP when imagine my surprise, I see this store. Being an avid cook and kitchen gadget junkie, of course I had to go inside. I wasn’t expecting much because most smaller kitchen supply stores don’t impress me. I have high standards and prefer well-made high quality products. Well, you can imagine how surprised I was to find this unicorn of a store. I felt like I just walked through a door into wonderland.
I thought I owned every kitchen gadget that was worth owning, but I was wrong. I found the cutest baker’s dusting wand by OXO and a cool round trivet made of strung-together felted wool balls. They had some of my favorite brands like GIR, Staub, Microplane, Nordic Ware and Opinel. They also had a cool selection of aprons, mugs, spices, oils and vinegars. I was in heaven as I walked through the store. There was so much to look at. They have a well-curated selection of items that I would want to carry if I had my own kitchen supply store. I would much rather support a great locally owned store than a big chain like Williams Sonoma (that doesn’t even really carry what I want).
Iowa City is so lucky to have a store as wonderful as this. Every time I visit this city I have a few favorite stores that I must visit and I’m so happy to add this...
