If you live in Louisville, Chicago, or Cincinnati… I cannot say enough good things about Gilkey Window Company.

A previous owner of my home had installed them. First of all, the windows are amazing. You can open them from the bottom or the top, and the screens can also move to the bottom or the top. They also have a little stoppers you can pop out from the inside so that the window can’t be opened more than a few inches, and the stopper easily pops back into place when you want to open the window larger.

But here’s what really impresses me about Gilkey: in one of the storms last spring one of the window panes got cracked. I called them expecting to pay to replace it, but apparently these windows have like a 20 year transferable warranty, so I’m still under warranty until next year. They came out and replaced the pane of glass for nothing but a service charge. I then asked if they replace the screens as well, since there are holes in some of them from wear and tear, and they do! You can do that without even paying the service charge if you drive to them to drop off the screens and pick them up.

Because my windows are not so new by now, when I was removing one of the screens one of the windows got stuck open on a very cold evening. I called just before they were about to close – they couldn’t come out to me because I had Covid at the time, but they FaceTimed me to took a look at all the different grooves and parts. I was able to get the window up again, and they advised me to get some silicone spray to lubricate the windows moving forward. When they came to drop the screens back off, I asked them to show me the silicone spray so I knew what to buy, and they just gave me a whole can. I offered to pay for it, but they declined.

We recently had 6 new Gilkey windows installed—3 triple pane double hung windows in our bedroom and 3 casement windows in our kitchen.

Gilkey’s window products are very good—they are very high quality windows that we are very happy with. They are a hundred times better than the original builder grade windows: they operate smoother, they seal better, they’re more energy efficient, they are clearly much stronger, and they look better.

The installation was top notch. Andrew the main installer was very professional and highly experienced. His caulking work was impeccable. We were satisfied with the quality of the installation, and I’m pretty picky.

Everyone we dealt with at Gilkey was friendly and professional.

What was less than satisfactory was the installation delay. We were told 8-10 weeks out, from when we paid our deposit and signed the contract, with the potential for a little longer if there were weather delays. The actual beginning of installation occurred at 16 weeks, and that was with me visiting the showroom and negotiating to get bumped up in line and have it moved up a week.

During that entire time we had almost no rain whatsoever, so the delays were not due to weather. (Although ironically, unforecasted rain on our installation day delayed half our installation another week.) I suspect they are taking on more business than they can handle, and are unwilling or unable to hire enough high-quality installers to bring down their installation time. At the very least, they should be honest with their customers about the real lead times.
