As my friends and I were driving across the Calcasieu River Bridge during our road trip from Florida to California, we couldn't help but notice how steep and narrow it was. We had read the reviews beforehand, but we thought they were exaggerating. However, as we started to cross, we quickly realized that this bridge was a nightmare.
The bridge was so rickety that it felt like we were driving on a roller coaster. The car was swaying back and forth, and we were all holding on for dear life. In the middle of the bridge, we heard a loud creaking sound, and suddenly the car jerked to the left.
We all screamed as the car veered towards the edge of the bridge. We were sure we were going to plunge into the river below. But then, miraculously, the car bounced back onto the road. We made it across the bridge, but we were all shaking with fear.
We couldn't believe that this bridge was still standing. It was clear that it wasn't structurally sound. In fact, we later found out that the bridge had failed inspection multiple times. How it was still open to the public was beyond us.
It was like something out of a cartoon. We couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. We had survived the Calcasieu River Bridge, but we vowed never to...
Read moreVery high bridge that was just a little bit scary. I've been over taller bridges but the low railing at the side might be adding to the fright factor.
Officially the Louisiana Memorial World War II bridge it is a through truss bright that carries I-10 between Lake Charles and Westlake, Louisiana and over the Calcasieu River. The bridge has a vertical clearance of 135 feet and was opened in 1952.
The bridge predates the Interstate Highway System and is rated as "functionally obsolete". It has had some structural deficiency reports and therefore the top speed on the bridge has been lowered to 50 mph. It was reported as "dangerous" and the 7th in the United States that is in need of replacing.
That said, I crossed the bridge successfully though I think I would...
Read moreWeird to review a bridge - but hey- 37+ people have left a review so lets do this. There is only two roads to get over this river for probably 30 miles- and both probably do not meet any kind of minimum standards. Both are federal interstates so lets not blame the state of Louisiana for this mess. This bridge is over 70 years old and factors rank the bridge as "a dangerous bridge" and 7th in the nation in need of replacing. If you are scared of heights and do not like adventure, this bridge is not for you. It is high to allow the ships to go under it. It is steep, narrow and it is sketchy. People drive like their possessed - some just trying to get off the bridge while some are slowing down to look at the view. Good luck and...
