Born and raised in DC....I know halfsmokes. After 27 years in the US Army travelling the world and the various sausages each country makes I still love my DC halfsmoke. No it's not Ben's Chili Bowl halfsmoke because that is a tourist spot! Anybody truly from DC don't eat at Ben's. Not to rude or throwing shade but it's true. A corner hotdog stand sometimes gives you the best hotdog/Halfsmoke. So on to my review...MeatCrafters has a halfsmoke that is cased in. That means the sausage has a transparent casing on it like frankfurters used to back in the old Philadelphia and NY delis. Their halfsmokes come uncooked. And there is no 'snap' to the sausage. After cooking I liked the taste but mind you I live in Ft. Bragg, NC. They do not sell half smokes in the South. Half Smokes are unique.. it's similar to a smoked sausage beef/pork combo but it has a distinct taste that only DC/MD/VA folks know. MeatCrafters half smoke was legit...but however T.O Willams Capitol Half Smoke is the real deal. I paid almost $35.00 for (8) half smokes to be shipped to Ft. Bragg, NC. I don't mind the price just so as long as I get the DC taste I know!!!! MeatCrafters is close but no cigar. But in all fairness they are def better than anything Ben Ali is selling on U Street. They were great a couple of years ago now cutting back on the size and the orders i received recently the duck sausages were TEENIE WEENIE!!! And the casings were open at the ends! Actually looks like they all shrunk! I'm not cheap by no means at all but i expect to get what i pay for! Going downhill like most everything else in the country! Not for me...
