I'm sure Steve doesn't recall this, but some winters ago I can into Metro looking to spend $5 or so dollars, I was maybe 10 to maybe even 11-years-old and due to genetics I probably looked younger to him---I'm getting a bit off topic but the first time I ever set a foot in a comic shop was in Metropolis and I was shy yet felt at home in some way. Ironically at the time I wasn't as interested in comics as I am now. But anyways I just walked in, looked around, and found these typically generic wooden LEGOS of Red Tornado and Iron Man in one package. So I bought it of course, then just as I was about to leave, Steve called me to a halt and looked back, he asked: "Are you a Yu-Gi-Oh fan or whatever it's called?" At the time I was and answered: "Yes." Then he continued on with-- "Here ya go." And gave me a neat looking Yu-Gi-Oh pin and wore to school the next day. But before I told him I didn't have anymore money, then he retorted with "It's on the house" or something like that.
Short story being-- Steve is a great guy, the shop has good collection (though personally it needs some more Invincible comics so I can catch up with the series, talking to you Steve if you're reading this), and a bunch of other collectibles for table top games (e.x. D&D and Warhammer 40K). For me also if you're big on comics as well, it's a good feeling to talk about comics and have someone actually understand what you're saying.
Metropolis Comics was the first comic shop I stepped into and it's now the first comic shop I wrote a review of.
Thanks a bunch,...
Read moreNever in my life have I ever been this sure I was in a place that was a front for trafficking drugs. And I am not kidding. Do not go to the store. The pictures of the storefront comic book store must be from years ago. They are now located in what can only be described as an abandon church. There was no employees that we could see during our short visit. They were in an office with the blinds closed and peeked through them when we came in. The comic books were arranged, not in a way that you would expect from a store, but on the set of a movie. They had almost no selection, and you would not have been able to find anything if you wanted to. the bathroom was out of order. And I am not kidding, although they were still open for another hour and a half they locked the door with us inside of the building. This is a wooden door, not one for a storefront. We could unlock the door to get out., But only after trying to push on it a few times because we thought it was jammed. I do not know what they sell there. But it is not Comics. Do not go...
Read moreThe owner Steve is extremely personable and he’s great about ordering special titles every week, including variant covers. He also holds them for a month since I only make it up that way every 4-5 weeks. He has many stories from the industry and which comic creators are cool and which are full of themselves. Cute kitty too! I don’t know much about gaming but there’s tons of it there. New comic selection is pretty good and a very good collection of variants and more recent back issues. Big section of trades/graphic novels too. Not much Silver or Bronze Age. Remember, this is small town Illinois here, so there’s just not the volume of customers to carry...
