Excellent quality food and very large portions. Very fair prices. Very clean place. Very authentic style. The food will make you think you're at the beach in Mexico but you're here in the cornfields of Illinois.
The menu might seem overwhelming at first to some if you've never had this type of food. (It was for us.) But the waitress was very helpful in giving us recommendations and explaining what some of the dishes are. It's very real and authentic food that you wouldn't expect to find in Central Illinois. If you're unsure, you can't go wrong with the shrimp tacos. The main course and sides were a very large portion and everything was very fresh and all the produce was very fresh too. There was such a wide variety of seafood, I've never even heard of some of these things, so I googled them to see what they are and I was astounded you could get these dishes here in Illinois. It felt exotic even.
If you're indisicive or usually just get a simple burger and fries when you go out, like me, maybe read through the menu before you go so you can get a feel for the wide variety of options available to you since these are dishes you typically won't find anywhere around here! It was a new experience for me, and a great one.
You could go simple and just have a nice meal (with plenty to take home) or you could have a grand feast with several people and have crab legs and even a full octopus if you wanted! And after your meal you could sit and drink beers for a couple hours and enjoy the music and atmosphere and friendly people there.
Definitely try the Empanadas de Cameron con Queso! Delicious! I think even a picky kid would enjoy these! The best way I can describe it is like a stuffed, deep fried quesadilla with shrimp and cheese and it was very flavorful.
Please give them a try and let's help a small business that is providing a unique dining experience to the community. Stop giving your money to fast food places that cost almost as much as real sit down meals nowadays.
This food will fill you up and leave you satisfied. Again, just read the menu a bit before you go if you really want to take a deep into some of these exotic dishes. Otherwise just get fish or shrimp tacos and you'll be very happy...
Read moreI was excited to try this new restaurant and went for an early dinner. I was the only diner for most of my meal. As I walked in, the chef was sitting at a table in the dining room and the server was staring at her phone.
Though the menu listed cervaza, I was told it was not available. I always say that a meal without wine or beer is breakfast...so disappointed (especially since you walk past a bar to get to the dining room).
I ordered the shrimp empanadas as an appetizer, which were delivered quickly. There were four of them, so it's definitely something to share. They were steaming hot. Not a huge flavor bomb.
Here is where I rant. I absolutely hate it when my main course comes before I finish my appetizer, and in this case, the main course came after one empanada.
I had the spicy garlic shrimp (see image below). The portion size was huge. Fries, very good. Rice was very flavorful, but luke warm (maybe it was meant to be?). The salad was undressed, but refreshing. The spicy garlic shrimp was bland. I could not detect any garlic, and it was not spicy at all. The most disappointing aspect was that the shrimp was not deveined.. They were small shrimp, but they all had visible noticeable digestive tracts, resulting in gritty shrimp. I understand that deveining small shrimp is tedious, but when the menu features more that a dozen shrimp dishes, you need to pay attention to details.
After serving my dishes, the server plopped back down in her chair and resumed using the phone.
Usually at this price point ($35) if the food is substandard, I cross the place off my list. In this case, I will go back after they have been open for a while and try it again, but I will not...
Read moreMy husband found this AMAZING place while looking for places to eat in the area. We are not local by any means. A little weary at first since mexican sea food places are hard to find the farther you drive from the city. But this place BLEW OUR MINDS. It was delicious!!!! We ordered the empanadas de camaron(shrimp) con queso(cheese), a camaron(shrimp) and pulpo(octupus) tostada and the small charola(platter) of camarones cucaracha. It was all very tasty and we enjoyed the fact that the camarones cucarachas were not super spicy and totally enjoyable. 100% reccommended and worth the drive any time. The servers were nice and kept circling back to make sure we were doing good. Overall a...
