Located 10 miles east of downtown San Bernardino in Southern California's Inland Empire region, Loma Linda is translated from the Spanish for beautiful hill. It is known for its large Adventist hospital system and its public university campus—Loma Linda University Medical Center, where we came over the weekend of Memorial Day for my partner's son's graduation ceremonies.
That Friday evening, a doctoral hooding ceremony took place, recognizing the achievements of students who have earned a doctorate or final master's degree. During the ceremony, each candidate is individually introduced, and their faculty mentor (his father) placed their hood on them in front of the stage. That Sunday, the commencement ceremony was held outside under overcast conditions.
