Habitat for Humanity is like the thrift store of home improvement, but better—because no matter what random project you’ve got going on, they always have what you need. Paint? Check. Light fixtures? Check. Random bucket of screws that you didn’t know you needed but now can’t live without? Double check.
The real magic, though, is out in the yard. That guy running the show out there deserves a gold medal—or at least a plaque by the scrap lumber. Not only does he know where everything is, but he’s always down to make a deal. Need a stack of tiles but only have $20? He’ll work some kind of wizardry to make it happen. And if you’re not sure if a piece of trim is the right size, he’ll even bust out a tape measure and help you figure it out. The man is a legend.
Inside the store, it’s like a treasure hunt. You never know if you’re going to find a brand-new chandelier or a slightly used toilet seat (don’t knock it; it’s an adventure). The staff is always friendly, and you can tell they love helping people get their DIY dreams off the ground.

Read moreThis location (I'm familiar with a few others) has a very wide selection of both furniture and building materials (reclaimed and new)! Living room furniture -- couches and divans to die for! Dining room sets, curio cabinets, bedroom furnishings, washer/dryer sets, electrical, and the odd reclaimed picture window (one was at least 8x10') or bathroom pedestal sink! I was oh, so impressed with the kind and knowledgable persons manning the facility, and with the resident store mascot, a sweet cat. I heartily recommend you try shopping there for building materials before going to Lowe's or Menard's. SUPPORT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY! Former President, Jimmy Carter has been working with this organization for...
