Sunrise of Madison has been a gift of comfort to my Mom and family since August 2018. From day one Sunrise Care Managers, Assisted Living Coordinator, Resident Care Director and Activities Coordinator were welcoming and helped my Mom transition to her new home. Over time they learned my Mom's personal care history and proved her with sense of belonging, love and laughter along the way. During Covid my Mom had to be moved down to Reminiscence Community when we was not able to go in . This terrified me thinking at 98 how would she adjust. Jelani, Reminiscence Coordinator along with Nadine, Assisted Living Coordinator did an amazing job ensuring my Mom was comfortable in her new room and environment. I was so concerned but Jelani & Nadine and Nancy, Resident Care Director stayed in constant contact with me which gave me great comfort. The coordination within Sunrise was wonderful. Luckily my Mom is a joyful person so the caring staff once again welcomed her and knew the needs of an elderly person which help with my Mom transition. As our loved ones age we want to provide a safe, caring and engaging environment. The Enrichment Coordinator and Care Managers do a wonderful job getting residents engaged to the best of their ability at these tender ages. To be noted during Covid when those days were hard for the staff on a personal level they continued to go above and beyond to be sure my Mom was feeling loved and secure. Sunrise of Madison presents beautifully. The grounds and facility are well maintained. I wish I could say the same for the care of its residents. Among many less egregious missteps, the one that troubles me to this day, is an incident that set us off on the wrong foot. Before my mom even entered the facility, my dad and I examined the initial billing statement. When we noticed a $900+ fee PER MONTH for administering medication, we opted to have my mom handle her own medications. The response was antagonistic, and in fact after requiring us to get a doctor's support of this decision, it seems they went behind our backs and asked the doctor to change the form to require medication supervision. We found this to be unethical at best. The only reason we were even made aware of this was that the doctor's office actually reached out to us to say they felt they were being "pressured into changing the form." There were numerous incidents and unprofessional behaviors for the entire 2 months that my mom resided there. The food was abysmal as well, which isn't acceptable given there are only 50 people residing there. Communication among staff and with family was also sub par. Once my mom took over her medication, staff continued to visit her with additional medication. If I hadn't been present to witness this, my mom would have received double doses. True there were some kind, compassionate, and caring people there, but some of the key personnel were certainly not what one would expect at such an expensive care center. When a loved one is diagnosed with Dementia.. you know the hardest step will be when you have to move them into a memory care home. You look to find the safest, cleanest, best staff to resident ratio for more attentive care and support, with a comforting environment knowing you are putting them into the hands of others to care for them on a daily basis. This step is extremely emotional for everyone involved. Sunrise of Madison has been a great fit for our family member.. the facility is beautiful, well taken care off, the grounds are lovely and allow resident to sit in rocking chairs on the front porches, there is nice variety of activities, and most important the staff has been great. For us, Jelani Lee, the Reminiscence Coordinator, has been incredible in every way. He has been instrumental in the transition for my father, has helped with every aspect of moving in, responds to emails and phone calls in a timely manner, is always pleasant and is a comfort knowing there is a point person to help with any communication as needed.
