We like going to Hannaford because it's the cleanest and most organized place to buy groceries, and the quality is great. It's more expensive, but it's a nicer place, so for us it's worth it.
A few months ago my husband and I watched in shock, three grown adults run out of the store laughing with paper towels, canned soda, and toilet paper over their heads. The Manager was aware of this and told us that they couldn't stop them because "we don't have Security on the premise." Later, my husband and I were talking to each other about how maybe things wouldn't be so expensive if they didn't just allow people to run out the door with tons of merchandise. As paying customers it's falls on us when theft happens.
Fast forward to a week ago. My husband went to get lunch at Hannafords, and upon check out, rang up one singular honey mustard packet twice because he was getting two. He threw the second one into the bag because he already rang it up with the first packet.
That's when he was stopped and the employee asked him to prove he paid for it. Well, he did! These honey mustard packets are like a buck! The loads of merchandise stolen with NO CONSEQUENCES was a lot more, but no action was taken against them, yet they hassle their paying customers??? I should be clear and say that Hannaford didn't invest in Security. He was stopped by a singular worker, only proving that they can stop people for stealing, they just choose not to.
I was not there when this incident happened, my husband called me at work to inform me of this situation. I was angry this happened to him, but even more angry that we go to a place because we feel it's nicer, pay the higher price tag, and come to realize it's not nicer, and we've been paying extra because Hannaford favors giving people running and laughing out the door free merchandise, and then they harrass their paying customers. We feel like clowns for giving Hannaford a single dime of our money, and never will again in the future. I encourage everyone to go to Market...

Read moreI really like this store. It is nicer than any other around and the prices are good.
That said, ridiculous alcohol laws have resulted in ridiculous store policies and nobody there was willing to budge. The guys from corporate are probably excited to hear that. I wasn't.
They card anyone "under 45" which really just means whoever they want to card. We were targeted. The policy meant that although I had my ID (ridiculous to ask for it as I'm clearly not a teenager) I wasn't sold beer because the person with me didn't have their ID. That person wasn't paying, wasn't consuming (none of their business), and was the same age as me, obviously not a teenager.
This is how I see it: The state has ridiculous laws that say jump. Instead of saying "no", the store's legal team said "how high?". They went overboard.
To their credit, I've never been carded there before. This review will stay up until the store forms a better policy that is respectful of their employees (who have the ability to tell if someone is a teenager or not, just like all normal humans can) and customers (who don't want to be hassled or have to travel with papers). I wish this company would stand against these draconian alcohol laws in this state, instead they stand against their customers by work with the...
