South Mountain reservation is like an oasis in the middle of suburbia. Summit Field is predictably located near the summit of the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains. The field is partially shaded and about 7 acres or so with an irregular shape that extends into adjacent picnic areas. There is a small picnic pavilion, porta potties, and numerous massive old picnic tables & grills which are, unfortunately, in various states of disrepair. The grounds are otherwise pretty well maintained and tucked far enough back in the reservation to provide a very tranquil setting. Parking is somewhat limited so be sure to arrive early if you plan to visit...
