I visited Distilería Coquí Inc. in Mayagüez expecting a distillery experience, but what I found was a major disappointment. The facility is extremely run-down and located in what looks like an old warehouse. From the moment I arrived, it felt more like a marijuana dispensary than a place showcasing fine Puerto Rican spirits. There were marijuana banners everywhere, and absolutely no emphasis on their liquors, which is what they claim to be about.
The whole place gave off an unprofessional and misleading vibe — not at all what was advertised. If you’re expecting a true distillery experience with tastings, history, or even basic presentation, you won’t find it here. This felt like a front with no real effort or pride in what should be a cultural and artisanal craft. Very disappointing and not...
Read moreThe Distillery is amazing. And Marcos was so great in taking us through the journey of the family from starting with an idea, working through it, and see it bear fruit. They are the third distillery in PR, the first to legalize the Pitorro, and for that they are the only ones allowed to carry the name Pitorro (thanks to some great foresight by the founder). You can tell how great the family is and how proud they are of re-introducing sugar cane product into the island. If you are visiting the island or are native and have never been, I urge you to give them a try; you will not be disappointed (the history lesson alone is priceless, and the rum product is exquisite). Cheers to the family and thanks a bunch Marcos for taking the time to share a bit of your...
Read moreDope tour! Got to learn how Pitorro is made and how they started. They literally made history and with them being a younger distillery & knowing that we got the tour from the first generation family, it made it very valuable. At least for me. You will not get that anywhere else.
Got to taste all the flavors! Cafe and piña had to be my favorite. But all are good! I rarely drink alcohol but if I ever find myself buying a bottle, I will def pick up some Pitorro! Super smooth.
Marcos (which happens to be the founder/owner’s son) was our guide and he was great! Very informative and nothing but positive vibes. Made the experience feel very personal. Alcohol enthusiast or not, I highly recommend anyone traveling in the area to check...
