Hinchman Acres & Ausable River Canoe Rental — Local services in Mentor Township

UNSAFE! Staff members are violent and Hinchman Acres owners do not hold them accountable. Our group was aggressively and prematurely ripped off of the river by Hinchman Acres staff on Saturday 7/30 around 3:30pm, cussing at us and nearly hurting many of us. We paid for the 6-hour trip that was to end at McKinley but were forced off early and separated from half our group that has been doing this exact route for more than 10 years. The following day our group leader met with the Hinchman Acres owners who were very discarding of her feedback but unwillingly gave some of our money back. Then on Monday afternoon while leaving the area, one of our group members stopped by Cummings Flats alone and was violently attacked by 4 Hinchman Acres employees who recognized him and retaliated of our filing a complaint about their behavior. Our friend is hurt but will be okay. I noticed there was a woman filming the altercation as we were abruptly ripped off the river. If you are this woman or know who she is, PLEASE reach out to connect. This has gotten way out of hand and these men need to be held accountable. Also, for the love of god, avoid this place at all costs. I am still in awe that this happened and feel terrible for what has happened to my friend. Reading through the reviews, a similar confrontation was reported 4 weeks ago and it appears they continue to allow this behavior. This place should be shut down...

ZERO STARS The worse thing that has happened to the town of Mio in my opinion, is Gotts Landing closing. I’ve been floating this river my entire life (38 years) and the last 5 have been renting from Hinchman Acres. After this past weekend, we will never be bringing our business back again. What was supposed to be a fun day on the river ended aggressively and violently. The staff working the Comins Flat landing 7/29 some not in uniform or identifying themselves as staff, used threats and physical force to divide and remove half of our group at the wrong landing. Our trip was paid to end at McKinley, but the staff on duty came into the water yelling threats and cursing in front of families and aggressively attempting to tip our group out of their canoes, including one of our handicap passengers that could of been seriously injured. They were very confrontational and displayed zero self control. After making a complaint to the owner and suggesting a employee evaluation, the following day this same group violently attacked one of our guests while using the public restroom at Comins Flat. He was by himself and jumped by 4 men that have been identified as staff on duty from Hinchman Acres. Very poor experience! Inexcusable management responses! If I could leave 0 stars, I would!

Rented two, 4-hr rafts today. One of the rafts began to deflate and cause a leak an hour after we began. We had to tie the two rafts together and shift all of the weight to one side in order to minimize the leak. This was not a fun thing to have happen. It scared the small children and was alot of work trying to finesse these two rafts together to salvage this experience. When we returned and explained what had happened, they weren’t the least bit interested nor did they care or show any sympathy for the hardship we had to endure using their equipment! All they were concerned with was the money. They even said “we don’t care or worry about things like that”!! So it definitely left a stain on the humanity side of things. I try to avoid places like this. I’d rather find a substitute rental place and do business with moral and intelligent people than support businesses who assess a higher value to a dollar sign than they do to...
