I know Sursum Corda will be having more dances here so I just thought I would share my experiences so women can be informed before they go.
I had high hopes when I arrived at the church, which is gorgeous by the way, for Adoration before the dance. Finding the entrance for the church was difficult, as most of the entrances were locked, and there was no signage. I ended up walking around the block a couple times, by myself, in heels, after dark. I was only able to find the entrance after following a couple of people.
When the dance started, things went well at first, with a couple of gentlemen asking me to dance. I quickly realized that even though the dance was advertised as being for people with no experience, that wasn't necessarily the case. I was a little disappointed to see that only the men were asking the girls to dance, but since everyone seemed to be intent on following traditional gender roles, I assumed the men I interacted with would actually act like gentlemen.
After a short lesson before another dance, everyone on the dance floor was told to pair up. All of the men on the floor went out of their way to ignore me, and one even shoved me out of the way so he could get to the woman he wanted. I was the only women left alone. All of the "men" who were sitting in the area also ignored me as well. The only reason I ended up with a partner at all was because an extremely drunk man forced one of his friends to dance with me. The entire experience was beyond humiliating, and I left in tears. This was also the first time I'd dressed up since breaking up with my ex who constantly made snide comments about my appearance, so the rejection and callousness was especially devastating.
There were some nice aspects, like the fact that cake was being served and there was free alcohol, but overall it was a terrible experience.
Ladies, if you want to be treated like a human, stay away from these dances. Like most trad lads, the lovely not-so-gentle-men of St. Stan's and Sursum Corda don't seem to view women they don't want to spend time with as people. Hopefully the way I was treated was just a one-off, but this behavior is just embarrassing for Christian men, let alone Catholic ones.
EDIT: Upon further reflection, most of the people who attended the dance showed up to Adoration beforehand. I was one of the only women present who wasn't veiling, as it's not something I feel called to do. I wonder if that had anything to do with the...
Read moreWow! Just wow! We visit Milwaukee every summer for family. Our experience of attending Novus Ordo masses in Milwaukee ihas been pretty harrowing to say the least. We decided to visit St. Stanislaus Oratory a few years back and were just astounded. Beautiful old church. Very reverent Mass. Friendly people. We are not regular Latin Mass attendees in our home diocese but are happy we found St. Stanislaus Oratory. It is a wonderful Mass and community and wont scandalized you like many of the other Masses...
Read moreBeautiful church, I’ve been part of the mass going community here for a couple of years now and the ICKSP Canons have done a great job leading the parish!
I’m aware Latin Mass churches can be quite intimidating for some Catholics, especially if they’ve never attended one before. The congregation at St. Stanislaus is very kind and tend toward very serious about their faith.
Sunday Masses here can be very full and there are people and families of every generation who...
