It was the case that much of the programming was free for much of my time attending shows at the Union Cinema. Some years ago they started charging a nominal fee. It became prohibitive since I was living on the street for those years.
What the Union Cinema is as a resource can be hard to put into words. It is a bog standard University cinema for sure. The world needs bog standard University Cinemas.
It was the only place I was seeing repertory 35mm screenings since Landmark and Marcus converted to digital. Having a well maintained and programmed 35mm venue is just incredibly vital to keeping film and film culture alive.
Their rotation of Festival of Films in French, Latin American Film Festival, Zen Film Featival, Muslim Film Festival, Underground Film Festival and others have broadened my understanding of the medium. And the world.
The talkbacks, musical guests, regulars. Because of the paywall it almost took away a start from my rating.
