To quote The Who, "I can see for miles and miles". High Point holds the distinction of being the highest point in the state of NJ and based on the views alone, you would be hard pressed to argue the point. From the base of the monument, you have panoramic sight lines in all directions offering incredible views of the neighboring states. This can be enjoyed by anyone including the young and old, physically handicapped or otherwise. The optional climb to the top of the monument however is another matter. With an endless array of steps starting with a circular staircase, it's quite a hike to the top. For those with acrophobia, the stairs are fairly narrow (only one set of stairs for going up or down) but do feel secure all the way to the top. Once you arrive however, it's a bit underwhelming, the windows are fairly small (Needless to say you remain indoors) and the plexiglass is rather old and obscured in many spots. It's all free and the exercise is good so if nothing more, you'll walk away with a sense of accomplishment and knowing you slayed a few excess calories. I would tend to avoid the climb however on busy weekends or in the high heat of summer as the payout just isn't there.
One other point. Bonus for going in 2023. ...
Read moreI spent the first 26.5 years of my life in New Jersey and never made it to the State's highest point. However, I did finally come here when I decided to get to every state high point. This one ranks 40th for elevation, and 50th for name creativity, but it is actually a fairly nice place. Most people get to the top by road, but if you want a little bit of a challenge, park at the Greenville Road trailhead of the AT and hike up from there. About 700-800 feet of elevation gain over 2-3 miles. Of course, climbing the tower that honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice gives you a workout as well (though the windows up top are a bit cloudy and their hours are limited). Nice views from the summit. The beautiful surrounding area of Sussex County resembles parts of Appalachia more than the rest of New Jersey. This is one of the most visited high points in the country and well worth the trip. I only wish I had gotten...
Read moreMy reviews are based out of a winter trip to this place. I visited here on 8th March (Women's Day). Firstly, its fully covered with snow and is great place to ski. Have seen a lots of people doing that here. It gives you a good incline for a beginner to intermediate level. We came here for hiking though. Hiking is a little difficult owing to the icy conditions but we have taken the easier route of 2.6 miles for our hike and then walked across the border of NJ and NY. The landscape, ponds and lakes were a bliss. You can walk on the icy lakes, sit and take a butt skating. The monument and the area around it gives a breathtaking view of the Delaware River, Kittatiny mountain and the vast expanse. Definitely a must visit in winters. Will do it again in Summer to see how it differs from the...
