I have been glassblowing now for about a year in the Morris County School of Glass Studio. Time for an update of my previous review of a year ago. Is it still fun? Do I still like it?
Yes, I do. In fact I love it.
Glassblowing is a terrific long term hobby for me. The Studio is still fantastic and I very much enjoy working with other students and instructors who have become friends. One benefit of the Studio is that the instructors Michelle, Hannah and Jason are excellent glassblowing artists in their own right and are skilled and supportive to novice glassblowers like myself. I work on pieces in so called Labs, wherein my benchmate and I work semi-independently on our new pieces for a couple of hours and challenge each other in consolidating our skills and developing new skills. It is always a pleasure to see and work with other students in the Studio and see how a glassblowing community is forming.
I would love to see the group of regular glassblowers in the Studio expanding. Try out some of the Studios events. You may also want to visit a free Open House Demo that the Studio conducts on a fairly regular basis. Sign up for the free newsletter so you won’t miss the...
Read moreAmazing! My sister and friends took me for my birthday and it was awesome. We did the standard package and had a few items to choose from. We each were able to make one thing and we all ended up choosing the bowl cuz it was really cool and involved actual blowing of glass rather than just shaping. Jill was our instructor and she was great at it. She explain the steps and the setup and taught us things as we went, but she didn't do it all for us. She kept us very safe and was right there with us but still made us feel like we were the ones doing it. For safety reasons and practical reasons we went one at a time, but it was fun because we got to watch each person make their own piece and take pictures of them and such. Afterwards we walked around their little gallery which was in a greenhouse-esque room which let in a lot of light to make the glass look great. I would recommend this place for anyone because it was such a unique experience and a lot of fun. You could give a class as a gift to someone or you could go to the class and make a gift for someone. I'm sure I'll be going back at...
Read moreMy partner and I had a wonderful time at a recent mosaic session! Bonnie was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable about mosaics. While she wisely advised us not to choose overly detailed patterns, we, of course, ignored her and ended up semi-regretting it later! Creating intricate designs definitely takes longer than the two-hour session we signed up for. However, Bonnie and the team were very accommodating, letting us spend more time as long as we weren't overlapping with other sessions. Even after four hours, we're not quite done, so we'll definitely be returning to finish our pieces.
The studio space is great, with plenty of parking and a very welcoming atmosphere. The greenhouse where we worked on our mosaics was filled with stunning finished pieces, which was so inspiring. All the staff were extremely friendly and even made sure to say hello to our dog, which was a lovely touch.
We're really looking forward to coming back to complete our mosaics and can't wait to try a glass blowing...
