Truly excellent garden space with wooded hiking trails. Frelinghuysen Arboretum has wonderful formal gardens, many benched areas to sit and relax, and is on the Patriot's Trail. Google Maps conveniently shows the trails in the arboretum, and the picturesque Whippany River that goes through the property.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum is one of New Jersey's gifts to the world. The photos I have posted show just some of the gardens, flowers and quiet places to sit here.
Logistical information: there appears to be quite a bit of parking, although all venues might attract a swell of people at times. I've never had a problem parking in the several times I have visited there. The entry is on E. Hanover Rd. I mention this, because, once, my car GPS took me to the Whippany Rd. gate which is an exit from the Park. Heh, my car GPS is not Google Maps. You'll have no problem if you use Google Maps on your phone. If you are visiting from out of the NYC area, it's an easy drive from NYC along I-80, or I-78, to I-287 to get there. And while you're at it, scan around the area on Google Maps to see more treasures to visit in the area.

Read moreIt was a pleasant place to visit on a beautiful Sunday. There was plenty of parking ,clean bathrooms, and it was easy walking through the different planted areas of the grounds. There were closed areas from earlier storm damage, so not all areas were accessible. I enjoyed the multitude of plants from around the world as well as some very rare trees. Each small garden area was a different planting . Even though it was late in the growing season there were plenty of blooming flowers to see. If I were planning anther trip, I would try the early September time frame it would be cooler than August and still give you all the summer plantings. There are areas with picnic tables where a packed lunch out is made easier for you to sit and enjoy the area. I will begoingback at different times of the year to really get a sense and picture of all the planted areas. As with any arboretum multiple visits are required to view the different blooms of the plantings. All in all it was an enjoyable day in clean and historic area. My four star review was because of the closed trails I was unable to use due to the...
