I wanted to explore an old haunted style cemetery in New Orleans but because all the other ones cost money I decided to come here. The cemetery is open to the public and is free. You can see the spooky old and gritty vibe to it. Some of the graves are huge. This cemetery is certainly off the beaten path but it was definitely worth it especially because it’s free.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Cemetery on Louisa Street is not to be confused with the Uptown cemetery of the same name. This was originally a privately owned cemetery, owned be Jose Pepe Llalla. The cemetery is somewhat unique in its mix of nationalities and religions. The cemetery is open every day and divided into three sections, in the same area.

The cemetery office was super helpful in confirming the location of my ancestors in this cemetery. Beware -- there is another cemetery of the same name Uptown. I highly recommend calling the office before venturing there. If you visit M-F, they are even able to radio one of the caretakers to meet you there when you arrive, which I also strongly recommend. A shout-out to Shawonda in the office for going the extra mile and to caretaker Tyrone for guiding us to the right spot in the cemetery and generously sharing...
