We live in Hawaii Kai and have wanted to give the BPB Cottages a try for sometime.||||So, we booked 2 nights(Thursday & Friday) in a one bedroom cottage. Here is what we found and observed during our stay...||||Active duty can make reservations one year out. Retires 6 months out. A credit card is required for reservation. 30 days to cancel. No pets allowed.||||The Good:||||Check in was easy and off we went to our beach cottage. It was a duplex with each side having private driveway parking. All the rooms were very nice size. Tile floors throughout. One large bedroom with queen bed, dresser, 2 nightstands, ceiling fan, closet with extra towels, blankets, pillow, ironing board, etc.||Living/dining area with 2 ceilings fans, sofa, chair, end table, coffee table, TV, table and chairs for 4. The furniture was all rattan style. Kitchen had a ceiling fan, full size fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer combo, toaster, coffee pot, pots & pans, silverware, dish soap, etc. More than enough stuff for your stay. Blinds on all the windows. 2 SPLIT A/C UNITS that cooled the entire place nicely...except for the bathroom. Bathroom had no window but had a huge walk in shower...we LOVED it. There was a covered lanai on the back with a table and benches and 2 additional sitting chairs. Also, a picnic table on the grass along with a charcoal barbeque. Outside shower and hose to rinse off sand. Everything was CLEAN and worked fine. Our view was very nice...just steps to the beach. There were a couple freighters sitting out in the ocean. It was Very relaxing on the back lanai. Very nice breeze. No lifeguards here but by the check-in office, is another stretch of beach and there was a lifeguard there, along with showers & toilets. ||||Inside the cottage it was very quiet and we slept well. NO complaints on the cottage itself and the price we paid per night...which was $90.00, no tax for hubby's rank.||||There is an open air restaurant bar on the adjoining Coast Guard Station called The Hideway. Open in the afternoon thru the evening. Not much food is served but you can bring in your own. Drinks are cheap. A lot of TV's. Military ID is required to go on the Station. There is also a Mini-Mart with gas station about a 10 minute drive away. There is also a Subway there. The town of Kapolei is about 12 minutes away and there are many restaurants and stores...line Target, Costco, Ross, etc. Wet & Wild is about 15 minutes away.||||The Bad:||||All who are eligible can book multiple units...even for family/friends/coworkers who are Not eligible. I don't think that is right as it limits the open units for the folks who ARE eligible. My opinion. MANY of the eligible people invite MANY people to stay or visit their cottage...so it makes it more of a "party" than say a couple or one family. Again, I don't think it should be allowed. If one stays at a Marriott Hotel, one can NOT bring in multiple guests to visit or stay with them. My opinion. There is a gate with card entry for registered guests. MANY people went up to the gate and swiped their pass to allow non-guest in. There is also a walkway into the cottage area that is not enclosed so really anyone can be in the cottage area. A lot of trucks/cars parked around the area from all the non-eligible "guests". Along with noise.||||There is a RIDICULOUS amount of trash in the entire area. I don't believe it is from the folks who are eligible to stay there...it is from the locals in the area, who come and use the beach, visit, camp, etc. They choose to just discard it instead of taking it home with them. VERY SAD.||||The Hideway is open late (1AM or so) on the weekends. SO, you have much vehicle traffic going past the cottages. I saw MANY young military drinking excess while they were there. I hope they weren't driving but I believe they were.||||Check in is ONLY from 3PM-6PM. Check out is at 11AM or you have to pay for each hour after. ||There were ants and a few flies in the unit. We were vigilant about keeping the screen door shut but others may have not. The units could be sprayed more as there was also bugs on the back lanai. NOT hordes of them but enough to be pests. ||||Room keys/gate pass has to be returned at check out or you will be charged. At check-out, I told the man who was sitting at the reservation desk about my observations and how I think their "guests" policy is not appropriate. He became rather confrontational and was defending the policy. I told him to PLEASE relay my concerns to his superiors...perhaps, the "policy" can be rethought. I did take a comment card and have filled it out. Whether anything changes...well, only time will tell.||||So, we Really enjoyed our cottage and will most likely return. BUT, I saw many things I did not like...visitors, TRASH, etc.||||Please give me a Heads Up vote if my review has been helpful to you or...

Read moreAir conditioner in the living room, where my young son was sleeping didn’t work well so very hot late afternoon and early evening. Numerous Wi-Fi problems. TV service didn’t work at all. My son mentioned it to me, but it wasn’t until the last night. We were there where he Told me the extent of where it was completely not functional at all or else I would’ve reported it and gotten it fixed if you would’ve told me sooner. Couple cabins around mine, directly next to us and catty corner from us were having parties with loud music. One of the cabins was even playing live music, literally 20 feet from my head. All night, long, three nights in a row. You could hear cussing very vulgar language that my young son should not be hearing. But I’m not the type of person to just complain. The morning of checkout I had a last minute emergency, well two of them, with less than 24 hours of leaving the island and going back home to the mainland. I could not find my NEX receipt for an item that was between 400 and $500 and it did not work and they told me I had to bring it back with the receipt. Money I really couldn’t afford so I was actually looking forward to returning it anyways. I probably had a total of 10 to 15 NEX bags and three separate trash cans to go through and look in every corner under every pillow and blanket and sheet and so I knew I was going to be a little bit late checking out. So at first, I asked for 30 minutes to 1 hour so I didn’t have to rush, and absolutely not and I immediately asked for at least 5 to 10 minutes and was told the same thing but then I was told that I would be charged extra. And then she went on to tell me what the financial charge was for how much later you checked out? So at that point I’m just freaking out wasn’t even worried about my first emergency, not having lodging the final night, but now focused on the new sudden emergency with finding the receipt. I’m the type of person that always cleans up after myself. I’ve done it at the Schofield Inn, Hale Koa, Bellows, Pililaau, barking sands, Edelweiss in Germany, shades of green Disney World and all the other Military lodgings i’ve stayed at around the world over the last 15 years 20+ something places. Even in the civilian world, Stan at hotels when I go visit my sisters, cleaning up my table and stacking plates at restaurants to make it easier on the staff and Service. Being polite and showing respect and that’s what I’ve always done because that’s how I was raised. But, when they told me I would be charged for not being in the office and checking out at 11. I was in panic mode looking for that receipt. If I didn’t feel pressured to have my keys at the front desk on the other side of the beach because they had me on the other side of Nimitz Beach,, if I didn’t feel that financial pressure they put on me obviously I would’ve cleaned up the mess I made looking for that receipt. Who wouldn’t? I don’t know what they’re doing. They told me my manager is going to review it and they’re probably going to charge me. The point is I’ve never left a hotel room, dirty or messy in my life and if I had not felt pressured being more financially burdened than I already am after losing my house in a housefire and now the contractor I hired a few years ago bought the job and now they’re trying to sue me and put a lien on my house, that financial burden, had me freaking out in a hurry to find the receipt. And if I didn’t feel like that, obviously I would’ve just used the extra 5 to 10 minutes. I asked for to clean up the mess I made. But no, I couldn’t. I couldn’t afford to because I had to find that and have the keys over there all the other side of the beach at the front office at 11 exactly. Most of the staff I talk to there were incredibly nice and polite. Just like all the other places I stayed at over the years in Hawaii and when I lived here. Even here at this place, they were still nice. Especially the maintenance man. I wish them all well. But I will never stay...
