KIHA has no integrity. KIHA is very adamant about their policy that does not allow "promotion of other programs" per their facility rules. However, the rule should be updated to state they do not allow promotion of local programs. After playing hockey at KIHA for years our family was banned because our child had travel team stickers on his helmet. (KIHA did not produce a tournament team, nor did they facilitate tournament opportunities for the older youth) If you look at KIHA's social media and their facility you will see a number of other programs being promoted, to include the program my family got banned for supporting. The hockey director did not discuss his concerns with us. He sent an email which we received after a very concerned parent overheard him and the other employees making grossly inappropriate comments about our child and contacted us to let us know.
KIHA is an unsafe environment. Parents, if you care at all about your child's safety and wellbeing, do not allow them to skate or play hockey at KIHA. We have observed a number of inappropriate behaviors. The director has made comments to us about our child that made us extremely uncomfortable. If you choose to play hockey at KIHA please educate yourself on grooming practices and be present to observe everything. Additionally, please talk to your children about "tricky people" and what is appropriate conduct. There is significant cause for concern when a program bans all the older children and their families so they can build a new program #fromthegroundup. Additionally, we have NEVER allowed the director to work "one on one" with our child, and he had no part in any of our child's growth as a hockey player. During the "KIHA Klinks" our child was frequently the one demonstrating the skill being taught, he was never the recipient of any coaching from the hockey director who simply stood on the rink, half paying attention, talking at the participants. Every story that comes out of the director's mouth is a very creative fabrication that may or may not contain any truth.
KIHA does not support or encourage growth in hockey players. Playing hockey at KIHA was always a disappointing experience in every league. There were never enough people to play a game in the upper youth divisions, and not enough players in any division for multiple teams to encourage competition and growth. KIHA also refuses to collaborate with any other hockey programs to try to provide growth and competition. KIHA required kids to pay for and play in their age group youth league in order to be able to play in the adult leagues where they could be challenged and actually grow. Games and practices at KIHA were changed at the last minute or cancelled with no notice. We've been halfway across the island heading to practice when we received a text letting us know that practice is cancelled less than an hour prior to start time. We had to sit around for 30-45 minutes after a game was scheduled to start while KIHA employees scrambled to grab any 12U player who just finished playing a game, an adult who was sitting around or wait for a goalie to arrive so our child's division could play their scheduled game because there were only five kids registered in the entire division. There was such a large number of people who left KIHA after the new director took over the hockey program that the Ice Palace program is growing, and the HiHi Hockey program was formed and runs a large program at the rink in Mililani. For the record, both of these programs are significantly more focused on the skills, growth and development of the players as both individuals and as teams. HiHi also facilitates multiple tournament opportunities for their players over the course of the year, which is another area where KIHA is completely failing. Please exercise caution when deciding where to play...
Read moreWe played hockey at kiha for the last four years. The first two years were a really great experience. The previous hockey director was very invested in the growth and success of all the players. There were multiple teams in every division, and each team had knowledgeable and enthusiastic coaches to help the players learn and grow. The previous director also fielded tournament teams to give the players an opportunity for different experiences and competition. Seeing what a great experience kiha was for my son actually inspired me to start playing hockey.
Since the regime change in September of 2022, the new director has destroyed the hockey program. Almost everyone who was at kiha before he arrived has been pushed out and banned from the facility. The current director will be nice to you as long as you are doing what he wants. Once you aren’t useful to him anymore he will bully and harass you and then ban you when you disagree with him. (My family is a prime and very public example of this).
Thankfully kiha isn’t the only place to play hockey on the island. All the great coaches and families who were banned from kiha still play in the other inline program and the ice program.
PS if you want to play at kiha and save yourself the trouble my family endured then just say no...
Read moreAloha!! I truly want to highlight the essence of OHANA! ~ This is the atmosphere you experience from the friendly and compassionate staff at Kapolei Inline Hockey Arena. It’s a fantastic venue! They offer affordable classes and public skating sessions. You can rent lockers, skates, and even space for any kind of gathering. The staff is attentive and never overlooks any issue or moment; if you have a question or just want to 'talk story,' they will engage with you enthusiastically. I also want to emphasize the exceptional tolerance and diligence that every staff member here willingly demonstrates. Recently, I faced some trouble with my car and had to wait for it to be towed from the lot. We’re talking about a two-hour wait after closing on a Saturday night. I felt so guilty and kept checking in with the arena's manager to express my apologies and gratitude for his hospitality in allowing me, my elderly father, and my two children to rest inside the facility. He offered us food and kept a watchful eye on the lot while we waited in our car, trying to catch some sleep. We are regulars here on Saturday nights. I wouldn’t choose to go anywhere else. It’s such a warm and safe environment. It’s incredibly fun! Very family-friendly! With music, dancing, and skating!!! --...
