I do not and WILL NOT recommend YMCA to anybody! I am 8 months (high risk) pregnant right now and my husband had surgery on his bicep/shoulder last month. Before all these, we had our membership on hold because I was out of the country for over a month and my husband was so busy with work and life having to do everything by himself here in the U.S. We didnt know my husband was gonna have a surgery and that I am gonna be pregnant before we requested the first membership hold or else we would have just cancelled our membership. April 2019, they started charging us again. We explained to them and requested to put our membership on hold again for few more months because of our current situations. It's not that we couldnt afford the membership but it would be stupid to keep paying for something we're not going to use because we CAN'T PHYSICALLY DO IT. Like I said, I am a high risk pregnant patient and my husband just had bicep surgery and is still going through Physical Therapy and was told by his Doctor to not carry anything over 2lbs. YMCA had the audacity to ask for a doctors note and then told us "they will do a one time courtesy of $5/month as a holding fee". For one: YMCA, my husband does NOT work for you for your director to ask for a Doctors note. 2. We are the clients! You work for us! And finally, how dare you question our integrity? Why would we lie and spend time to try to reach out to you guys to explain the situation? We could have just easily cancelled our membership but we originally did not want to do that as we we're planning to stay with YMCA once my husband is recovered and I recovered after the birth of our child. After the ridiculous email from Luaren Wilson, the YMCA's membership sales director (O'Fallon), it showed us that they are not a True Christian organization. We will never step foot at any YMCA again and we will never recommend this company to anybody! It is ridiculous that they want us to provide a doctors note as to why we cant go to the gym. Again, 1 had bicep surgery and 1 is a high risk 8 month pregnant patient and they expect us to keep going to the gym or pay $5 monthly hold fee. Again, it's not the money, it's the principle. Don't be telling us you guys are sorry about our situation but we will still charge you. Not a good Christian practice!
Update: 05/04/19 I am appalled by how this company responded to my husband! Matt Jones, the executive director of this location emailed my husband with a threatening tone! Acting like we are harrasing Lauren. My husband only responded to her email once and that was it. We never made contact with her after that. He also called my husband ignorant. This "Christian" organization calling (x)customers ignorant. Not only did he call my husband ignorant, he also accused my husband of contacting his employee via her personal Facebook which is a blatant LIE! My husband reached out to the YMCA Public Facebook page and not to anybody's personal Facebook. When I asked him to send me proof of this alleged "contact" like a screen shot of the alleged conversation, he refused to send anything and asked us to set up an appointment with him instead. Of course, coz he's got nothing! This executive director is very arrogant and rude! I cannot believe the nerve of this person to accuse a customer like that AND THEN CALL SOMEONE IGNORANT! No wonder they have low reviews and some employees dont know how to deal with people. It starts from the (no)leadership.
Avoid this place at all cost. Rudest director of any business I have known.
P.S Watch out for some of the "5 stars" reviews and really listen to the legit reviews of people with real HORRIBLE experiences from YMCA OFallon. Majority is saying the same stuff because it's true. Matt Jones aggressively emailing us and calling my husband ignorant and Lauren Wilson feeling entitled to ask for a doctors note and these are the directors for this location. Do yourself and your family a favor and stay away...
Read moreI’ve been trying to get a simple issue resolved since April with no response. I followed up multiple times and even told David I would leave a review if I continued to be ignored—so here we are.
This place has a massive employee turnover rate, and it shows. No one follows up, and communication is almost nonexistent.
If you cancel your membership, beware: they’ll still charge you for the following month, even if you cancel well before the next billing cycle.
And do not put your child in their before/after-school program. Young kids are grouped with much older children, and there are only two staff members watching over 30+ kids. It’s completely unstructured and unsafe.
My child was hurt multiple times. As a kindergartener, she had the wind knocked out of her by a much older boy—and no one from the actual organization reached out to inform me. At best, you’ll get a brief incident report from an after-care worker. Otherwise, you’ll hear about it from your child on the way home.
In one especially alarming incident recently, my daughter was repeatedly hit by another boy during morning care. No one intervened. She was sent to class in tears. It was her school teacher who noticed, sent her to the nurse, and the nurse had to walk down and tell the before-care staff that what happened was not okay—and that they should have notified me immediately and treated her injury on the spot.
I’m actually having my daughter switch schools entirely because of the bullying she experienced in Y Club—with no support, no resolution, and no recourse.
The summer camp is also no better. I pulled my daughter after a couple weeks. She came home with sunburn from scalp to toes and was suffering from heat exhaustion. The kids are outside all day unless they’re swimming or using the restroom. Most of the staff are teens who are clearly not trained or supervised. They don’t remind or encourage kids to apply sunscreen, reapply it, or stay hydrated. Most of the time, the staff were just chatting with each other instead of actually watching the kids.
This place is a liability waiting to happen. Save yourself the stress—and protect your child—by...
