Well I am 60 years old and on disability for chronic kidney disease. It is vital that I keep my hydration and nutrition up.Unfortunately with the high cost of some of my medications and grocery prices sky high I wasnt able to do that this month.I reached out to some local agencies for help and St. Gertrudes was able to help me out with some canned goods and gave me 2 $25 food vouchers for Nasers in Apollo. They have been closed the last few days due to the power outage in our area. They were open yesterday so I got my friend to take me over from Leechburg. They were out of alot of things not much to pick from and I understood that under the circumstances. So I got what I could to make a few meals to get me to Friday. When I went through the checkout the cashier starts putting things I had to the side when she was done I had a pack of chicken and a loaf of bread. I said whats that she said thats all thats covered under the vouchers.I said your jokin right and she said no thats all you can get.I started getting upset and told her St. Gertrudes said I could get only food no tabacco, toilet paper, dog food ect. Just as long as its grocery items. Then the manager says whats the problem I told him what was goin on and he said meat, milk, and bread.I said what, he said meat, milk and bread thats all you can you get.I said thats not what they told me. He said I dont care what they told you I'm tellin you what you can get.Well for someone who hadnt had a decent meal for goin on 6 days I was pretty upset.I hadnt had anything but water to drink the last 7 days and pop is expensive so I had a pack of sugar and some Kool Aid packets. It would have been nice to have something to drink besides water. They wouldnt let me get the sugar or the Kool Aid. I had pierogis, eggs, spam, and a few other things and I couldnt get any of it.I told him Ive been out of food for almost a week. That was the whole purpose for the vouchers he said I dont care what you eat or drink but you aint getting that other stuff. I said believe me St. Gertrudes is gonna hear about this, and he said yes they most certainly will. As I was leaving I saw him pick up the phone I really didnt think too much about it at the time but I went out put my stuff in the car and we left.Well while we were goin up the hill leaving the cops came flyin down the hill and pulled in the parking lot They must have been close by because they were there quickly. Here the manager called the cops on me. Really I'm 60 years old and never had the cops called on me,especially for doin what I was supposed to be doin.I could not believe it. Those vouchers were already paid for by St. Gertrudes so Nasers already got their money, what did it matter what I got as long as it was food.So instead of getting $50 worth if food and being ok for the rest of the week I got a pack of chicken and a loaf of bread. They say beggers cant choosy but this is ridicolous.I will NEVER go there again. For all the people who believe their so nice Take it from me...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've recently moved to the AK Valley and prior had never heard of Naser's Foods.
It was recommended that I shop there by a friend that had been living in the AK Valley for a while. I was anxious and happy to try out Naser's. The only grocery store options where I used to live were the "big box" i.e. Giant Eagle, Shop N Save, and Aldi's. I was eager for a new place to shop with different items and selections. I was especially interested in the meat department because most big box chain's are lagging at most.
My first visit to Naser's was incredible! I knew beforehand that they are known for their meat department, but I didn't know to what extent. Their own meats! Fresh! Butchers! I was taken back to ages past entering the meat department upstairs. The wonderful, clean smell, all the meat choices, and reasonably priced too! The meat will look different than what you are used to; its redder, fresher, and essentially better for you too.
Old favorites such as city chicken, stuffed chicken breasts, etc. Try getting city chicken from Giant Eagle!
The rest of the store is awesome too. Its overall smaller than, say, Giant Eagle, but they have less wasted space. They fit the same selections into a smaller footprint.
The prices of the general groceries is good. Kind of in between Giant Eagle and Aldi's. Very reasonable and easy on the wallet.
I'm happy to include Naser's into my regular grocery...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSmall family run grocer that has a bit of everything that a big box store has with prices on par with giant eagle. And the biggest selling point for me is the huge local meat selection they have. It's not huge like say a big box or a full on butcher shop. But huge compared to most small family run grocers that don't smoke their own meats and such.
If you goto a place because it looks modern and is some modern marvel to shop at, then you will be very disappointed. This is if I had to guess a 100, or close to it, year old split level building. The meat and deli department is upstairs while frozen and dry goods are on the bottom. It looks a little dated, but what building that old doesn't look a little dated? It fits into most of the area in that most of the homes here were built before 1950.
It's always busy with the parking lot filled no matter the time of day. The people are all very nice and talk to you like you've been going there for decades even if it's your first time there. It's not like most grocery or big box stores where employees hardly make eye contact let...
