I usually go to the Dominican Beauty Center in Essex but since moving west, I wanted to try Julia's Dominican Hair Salon. First, once I sat in the chair to have my hair washed, the young lady instantly started combing my hair while it was dry from the roots. I have naturally curly hair; 3C to be exact and my nationality is Black/African American. I reminded her that in order for it to comb through you'd have to wet my hair first. Also, when combing hair that is dry and tangled, start from the ends and not the roots. I thought every licensed hair stylist knew that. I asked for my hair to be blow-dried instead of doing the roller set and sitting under the dryer due to time. Mind you, I always wash and blow dry my hair with no problems at home. Why they air dried my hair before blow drying it with a comb and tried combing my hair with a rat-tail comb instead of a detangle comb. Once again, they combed my hair from the roots and not the ends causing chunks of hair to come out. I reminded her to wet it or at least comb from the bottom. But why should I have to remind someone I am paying how to detangle hair? Once she finished flat ironing my hair, she instantly walked away. I had to ask for edge control because my edges were flying. It was almost as if they do not know how to do different textures of hair. Next time, I will be taking that 35 minute drive to Essex instead of here because my...
Read moreToday was the first and last time I'll ever come here! I went in for a wash and set. Keep in mind that I've been to numerous Dominican hair salons before so I know the drill. I asked the lady washing my hair to please start with the ends and work your way to the root while detangling because I have thick hair. She didn't. The second time I asked her, she told me "it was okay." I explained to her that it wasn't okay and it felt like she was ripping my hair out. I had to tell her a third time not to comb through my hair starting at the root while detangling before she got an attitude, stopped detangling it all together, threw the comb in the sink and began to shampoo my hair very hard. I got my hair deep conditioned so I had to sit under the dryer. After about 25 minutes under the dryer an employee informs me that they'll be with me after they eat lunch and that I have to have my hair blow dried and not rolled. When I asked why, she said because my hair was "too course". Again, this is not my first time at a Dominican salon and I always get a wash & set, no one has ever told me they couldn't roller set my hair. It took another 20 minutes after that for someone to get me from under the dryer to wash the conditioner out....
Read moreI've been the salon twice. The first visit was great. No issues and I received a silk press. The second time I went when I arrived the lady that did my shampoo made a comment about my hair being thick. I explained how I don't get perms and that I've always had thick hair. So she processed with washing my hair and then Ana pressed it. A few weeks after my hair appointment I decided to get braids rather than going back to get a silk press. I washed my hair and I noticed that there was a strong/chemical like smell. After washing my hair I noticed that my hair was excessively straight (especially the ends). This was rather concerning because my hair always reverts back to its natural state after getting a press. I consulted with a professional who confirmed that some form of chemical product was placed in my hair unbeknownst to me. My hair since started thinning and shedding excessively. I am very disappointed because I trusted this salon with my hair and now I have to do deal with...
