This was my first time going to Cattle Baron, and they had my heart when i walked up to the door and heard some down home country music playing over the speaker... always a great way to start any experience. They were fairly busy from my perspective, however i was seated right away, but having had their food, i would have more than happily have waited if i had too. The crowd was a very healthy mix of older and younger, groups of families, friends hanging out over dinner, great atmosphere, plenty of room inside, and the staff were very professional and attentive. My waitress was Alexis, and she could not have been a better server... she was on top of her job and a pleasure to talk to, tho just from observance, the other staff were also extremely friendly and respectful and created an amazing dinner out for everyone with whom they came in contact. They do serve alcohol, and some of their specialty drinks sound delicious, but i chose a classic coke on the rocks! Alexis started me off with the bread, which was extremely fluffy, warm, and definitely delicious!! Reading through their menu, they have an awesome selection for every palate and the people around me raved about the salad bar!! I decided to get the wanton appetizers, stuffed with chicken... flaky, crispy, nicely stuffed, and definitely filling!! I didnt care for the sauce, however im not really a sauce guy so that is no fault of theirs...i highly recommend you give it a try and judge, because everything else was exceptional!! For my meal, after a grueling few minutes of drooling about the menu at my assortment of options and a stomach screaming for food, i chose the 160z prime rib, medium rare, because that's the only way any steak should ever be eaten đđđ, with a whiskey glaze and a loaded baked potato. Their service was so spectacular, that i couldn't even give Alexis my menu before they started stacking plates of food on my table... Jimmy johns thought they were fast....Cattle Baron speed in getting me my food was a force with which to be reckoned!! The steak was cooked to perfection... juicy, tender, perfect pink center, and once i started i could not stop eating. The whiskey glaze, which is an additional topping for a pittance of a fee considering how awesome it tasted and what it added to the overall experience of steak, was outstanding!! I was on the fence about getting it, and am very happy i decided to have it added... they have other glazes you can add so don't stop yourself from experiencing what they bring to your steak game!! Next to my steak, sat a loaded baked potato roughly about the size of a softball, with a watermelons' size amount of goodies stuffed inside...i know, I'm drooling too... just let it happen... because it was exceptional!! Served inside a tinfoil house to lock in the heat, it was the last thing i had eaten and it was still plenty warm and succulent!! They offer a wide variety of sides... so please help yourself to trying something different each time!! The only downside, i wish they would include vegetables as a standard on the plate and not as an instead of option...i could have easily just paid the extra few bucks to have them added as well... but they're veggies... gross rabbit food they may be, let's still promote some manner of health while i shovel a loaded baked potato into my gullet. Overall, highly recommend this restaurant. If you pass by one, you will be doing yourself an extreme disservice by not stopping. All American atmosphere, amazing down home food, incredible southern hospitality and the best staff around!! (Ask for alexis, but they're all great!) Tipped $20, maybe a little over 30%, but that was a personal choice and a thank you to my waitress for a wonderful experience. I hope y'all get a chance to stop in and share in the great...
Read moreCattle Baron use to be the IT place to go. There was nothing better than going for a nice steak and it was considered fancy, especially in Portales. However, that is no longer the case!
I have went 2 times with extremely poor service and long wait times and only one server for the entire restaurant during busy hours.
I decided that I was going to give it ONE more try tonight, but my family and I stood in the lobby for over 10 minutes waiting to be seated. My brother went and found someone and they said yeah, it will be a minute. It was at 4 in the afternoon, the restaurant part wasnât busy, but the bar was full.
We waited another 5 minutes and still were not seated. Ended up seeing a friend there who got up to get their own ketchup because they were waiting for some to br brought to them and no one did. Even they said the service was bad.
They lost out on business because my family and I left. I will no be going back. I tried giving the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe 3rd time would be a charm but it definitely was not the case.
This establishment has really gone down hill. I remember when the district manager would be in at least 2 times a month for a few days at a time and talk to every customer making sure they were satisfied with the service. I donât know if the management is involved like that anymore but maybe it needs to happen because three times?! Shame on me for giving it ANOTHER chance.
Do better. Get fully staffed. Pay your staff wages they can rely on other than their tips and maybe people would actually show up to work and be happy to be there. You would see a difference in...
Read moreI went with my cousin and her son, and I felt the menu prices were way too high. I ordered the only thing that was reasonably priced, which was a bowl of green chile stew at $7.95. I asked for an extra tortilla, which was not provided, but as it turned out the green chile stew wasn't good enough to need an extra tortilla. I have always said that was something that was fool-proof, that it was always good no matter who made it. This was in many ways the most average I have ever eaten. It has lots of meat, which would have been enough to win most people over, I'm sure, and the meat was thankfully trimmed of the fat. Green chile stew, should be a thick liquid, hence the name "stew". This a a thin liquid, making it more of a soup, except there wasn't enough liquid to really qualify it as such. it also was skimpy on the green chile. This was more of a beef soup with a little green chile in it. Even though it was the lowest priced item on the menu, Cattle Baron is native to NM, so I would have thought they would have a better idea of what that dish traditionally should be like. The service was good, except for not making sure I had two tortillas. It took a long time to get the waitresses attention to get a take home box for my cousin, and to get the bill. This was my first experience at the Cattle Baron in Portales, its birthplace. I have to say I was much more satisfied with the food and service at the Cattle Baron in Roswell and the one...
