I was referred to Green Dog by my new veterinarian clinic, Two Rivers, for a raw food diet for my dogs. Both my Sharpeis were suffering from ear infections, hot spots, allergies, and stomach issues. The staff at Green Dog were very helpful and guided me through all the options for the raw diet. (I was totally shocked to find out that raw chicken, turkey, and duck necks could be eaten without any fear of the bones shattering and becoming lodged in their throats or stomachs. If fact, the bones are soft, when raw, and are good for their digestion and, as an added benefit, also helps clean their teeth as they are chewing. I had been giving my dogs ham bones after making soup and learned that it was not a good thing to do as cooking bones makes them brittle and they could do exactly what I thought chicken bones would do, and that it could do them a lot of harm.)
Both dogs were not excited about the raw food, but I now have one dog eating it exclusively. The staff at Green Dog gave me suggestions and tips on how to introduce the food but one dog, being very stubborn and not accepting change, wouldn't eat the raw food at all. My vet suggested that she be put on a high quality, grain free, canned dog food. Green Dog staff helped me find one and she ate it immediately. The cost of doing this, of course, is more than buying a bag of dog food, but the canned food from Green Dog is no more costly than the mediocre canned dog food at the big pet stores and the sub par canned food at the grocery stores. After two weeks on this healthy diet, my dogs are looking so much better and acting a lot peppier. Their digestive issues are almost gone and their ear infections, hot spots, and allergies are completely gone. I'm hoping that this will translate into fewer trips to the vet and, most of all, a better life for my "babies" without all the painful ear infections, mucous-filled, itchy eyes and stomach issues they were continually getting.
I did a lot of research on what is actually in the big name dog foods and I was outraged and appalled by what I learned. I would rather have my pets eating human grade food than risking their health by giving them the unregulated garbage that is being advertised on TV. There is a good book written by a veterinarian, Martin Goldstein, called The Nature of Animal Healing, that is very informative and talks about what the pet food industry is selling to us consumers and how it is affecting the health and longevity of our pets. Read moreThis is simply the best pet shop in town! I highly recommend it.
All products are ethically sourced and sustainably made, with the highest quality ingredients. But what's even more important to me is how the owners and their staff are incredibly knowledgeable about their products, work to find ones that will suit your pets needs most fully, and give you their full attention. They stand by their products, and in most cases items can be returned if they don't meet your needs. Prices are higher than a big box pet store, for sure, but here you truly get what you pay for. And for me, this is worth it. We purchase items like wholesome supplements and treats, collars and leashes that last for years, and toys that are durable and we get lots of use out of. We always find something new, fun, or useful when we visit, and I feel good about where my $ is going. I even found a doggy seatbelt here! They have everything.
And, most importantly to me, the care staff provide is just above and beyond. I have a large bully mix we brought home when he was 2, and after lots and lots of training -- including visiting pet stores like Greendog Pet -- we found that Ferdinand just wasn't comfortable around dogs he doesn't know, and will react to them by barking. For a while I felt so much shame about this -- I wanted a shelter bully who would show the world that his breed didn't make him aggressive, not feed into that stereotype! But the staff at this shop recognized him for who he is, without stigma, and have continually helped us have a fun and safe time in the shop around other dogs. They shower him with love and positive reinforcement, and help us keep an eye on and give space to other shoppers so that we always have a good time. Ferdinand ADORES visits and basically thinks this is "his" shop, with his special friend Charity who we both adore. It's a treat to visit every time.
I feel so lucky to have Greendog Pet in town, it's...
Read moreWOW. I just moved to Portland and was starting what I thought would be yet another scavenger hunt to find a product which not many retailers carry. I hopped on Google Maps and put in "pet food, Portland, OR" - and Green Dog was the first result. A guy named Mike picked up and told me that although they don't carry my item, they order it regularly for a customer and would be happy to just order two each time so I'd have a supply whenever I needed it. And it's the same price as I've found online but without any shipping - so I get a great deal, too! THIS is absolutely top-notch service! I made ONE phone call, found my product, will have it in a few days, and can move on with all of the other fun aspects of...
