Let me start by saying that Bagel Land has been, hands-down, my fave bagel shop in Portland. We go there at least once a week, sometimes 2-3 times, and we LOVE their bagels. So the 3-star rating is based on the first 9 months I frequented the place (5 stars) and the last 2 months when things have gone downhill fast (2 stars).

A couple months ago, something changed. The friendly, familiar faces that provided us with über-competent service were replaced by newer and still friendly faces, but barely-competent service.

Things just seem out-of-sorts there--opening late, poorly stocked supplies, messed up orders, slow service...and I'm not placing difficult orders. Don't know if it's under new management or what happened to all the great women who were running the place before, but I hope the new crew gets it figured out soon. Otherwise, I'm going to have to find a different bagel place, and that...

I would have given 5 stars because I have been coming here since I was a kid and they make some good bagels. However, the last 4 times I have come in I have gotten the same guy behind the counter. I'm trying to get my bagels and go. He asks if I want any cream cheese or anything to "shmear". I say no thank you. Every time he responds with some variation "What!? Dry bagels??" like there is something wrong with my choice. It's not his job to judge how I like my bagels. Maybe I have an allergy, maybe I like to use my own cream cheese, maybe I don't want to pay extra. Whatever my reason is I appreciate you asking, but after I say "no" that should be the end of it. If he and I knew each other and/or it was some sort of running joke between us then that would be different, but we don't and it's not; and if he's done it all four times to me then I'm sure he's doing similar things to...
