Where do I begin? I guess I’ll with the fact that I’m still riding the high from our day long guided trip, which was two weeks ago. We spent the day with Brennan Churchill. Brennen is a master of his craft. I find joy in learning from guides so I frequent guided trips to enhance my fly fishing skills. Without a doubt, Brennan has given me the best experience over any other trip I’ve been on. He really emphasized the whole spectrum of fly fishing for trout. We scheduled our trip with the intentions that only two of us will be fishing with Brennan. Upon arrival to the shop on the day of the trip, we surprised him with a group of four instead of two. He was extremely resilient and showed excitement to take on the challenge for the day. Three of us in our group have a few years of experience fly fishing for trout, which left us with one newcomer to the sport. His time management with each individual was outstanding. Every one of us felt as if we got ample amount of shared time with Brennan to learn what we needed to learn to maximize our experience for the day. Brennan started off getting us food from a local sandwich shop which had amazing food! The first stop was a local spring fed creek where Brennan explained the origin and history of the driftless region. I was amazed by his plethora of knowledge, which is extremely beneficial for anyone that plans to continue fly fishing. We fished for a total of 13 hours, and we had to tell him that we were pulling the plug on the day. He was more than willing to stay with us until we felt fulfilled with our experience. Other than losing a fish from it spitting out the hook every once in a while, I didn’t have a bad moment the whole day. He even ensured that we were “set up right” for the following day that ended our trip to Southeast Minnesota. Brennan kept us laughing with his wittiness and humor. I wish that one day I can emulate his passion, charisma, and eagerness to teach others the joys of this hidden secret of a sport. I will absolutely be a returning customer. Thank you Brennan for an experience that I will never forget! I would give more...
Read moreBest experience ever! My boyfriend and I are used to lake trout fishing and genuinely wanted to learn as much as possible about fly fishing. These are the guys you want!!
We looked into a few other guide services in the area and the guys at Driftless were the most knowledgeable and experienced by far. We even stopped in various shops and the overall vibe with Driftless was beyond compare.
On the streams we were taught everything and more we could have possibly ever needed to know about fly fishing. The guide gave each of us one on one time to help us perfect our casts at each different spot we fished.
The guide completely caters to how much you want to experience and what your skills are. They are willing to be with you for up to 14 hours of fishing, lunch and fluid included!! This guide service isn't just for newbies like us, as we would have been in different spots if we had experience.
Well worth it's weight in gold for the cost. The experience is something neither of us will ever forget, we caught beautiful trout and the backdrop is breathtaking!! You don't have to go out west to experience the real deal, Driftless can give it to you!!
Only very minor flaw, if I have to give them one, was the website. I had troubles with submitting my deposit. However, they were incredibly customer service forward and we were able to work the issue out right away.
Just awesome experience, too much for words to even articulate. Will be going out with these guys again for sure!!!
Oh yeah, and they are the ONLY guide service endorsed by Orvis in the area. That's just kinda a big deal in the...
Read moreHad a great day with Mel on the water. Started off covering the plan for the day, going over locations, gear, flies. Mel gave me a map of access for SE Minnesota then we were on our way. We drove to the first spot about 10 minutes away. I was on rainbows within 3 casts. We worked our way up stream and caught some nice browns further up. After a few hours at the first creek we grabbed lunch and headed to the second location. We had lunch then hit the water. Worked our way up river and hit 3 or 4 more holes. Mel definitely “knows where the fish are”. The whole time we were on the water, Mel was helping me work on technique and teaching me how to work holes effectively, different flies to try, and casting techniques (I didn’t even realize I needed casting advice but my accuracy was definitely better at the end of the day than it was when we started off). I’ll definitely be coming back with my dad next year to try and finish the “driftless grand slam”. All in all it was a great day on the water and worth every penny.
Mel’s shop is also great, he’s got an awesome selection of Orvis gear and flies for the local water. Even if you don’t do a guided trip, the shop is worth a visit if you’re into...
