I'd list all the things I like about this gym but then you'd be reading a three book trilogy that would make the lord of the rings author blush, so I'll keep it as brief as possible. [Not really, buckle up folks]
Pros:
-Community - I'm pretty sure ever member here either works together or went to high school together. Everyone is extremely friendly and you'll get that home town vibe here.
-Atmosphere - Ok yea there's air conditioning but it's only there to prevent mold and move stagnate air. You're going to sweat if you push yourself but you're not going to die like you're in a hot yoga class.
-Variety - Looking for dozens of ways to blow out those muscle groups? Look no further. While it's not the biggest gym you've ever been to, it makes use of its space by providing plenty of free weights and machines. Best of all, it's pretty organized so you're not going to trek across the gym to find different leg workouts.
-Management - Hands down some of the best people run this place. They great you by your first name, offer advice if asked for, and stay pretty professional at all times. You'll be very happy with your decision if you chose to workout here because they'll treat you like a welcomed guest and not another body that contributes to their bottom line.
Cardio / Aerobics - Everyone knows cardio is hardio and nothing is more demoralizing than a crowded cardio area. I can promise you that you'll rarely, if ever at all wait for a cardio machine to open up. Theirs plenty of variety and machines to go around. As far as aerobics go, they have plenty of classes scheduled and virtual classes are about to be a thing soon. While I don't personally use the area, it's private, clean, and when classes are going on the music is going loud and it looks like they go pretty hard in the paint. Never the less the class members are always smiling at the end when I do see them leaving.
Cons:
It's kinda quite - I'd make sure to bring your headphones. The music is pretty low so if you like grunts and clanking weights then add this to the pros section.
Water fountain - Alright I'm just being picky here but it would be cool if it had one of those newer fountains that let you place your blender bottle under it and fills your bottle up in like...5 seconds. It's whatever. It's got a basic water fountain.
To conclude, this is a fantastic gym with a small town feel to it. It doesn't really get too packed, even during the peek 3-6pm time. You'll always find something to use. I'm military and have lived all over the country and you can trust me when I say this: It's one of the best gyms I've been to. It's very easy to over train yourself because you'll always look forward to working out here. Take the leap and join. You won't regret...
Read moreThis is truly a community fitness center who cares more about their members then just making a profit. My Mom passed away and I came back to Southern Maryland to help my Dad and family. That being said in the midst of a rough time in our lives, I needed to work out to relieve stress after going non-stop for a month. I called to see if I could get a temporary pass and I would gladly pay for me and my wife. To my surprise they gave us a complimentary pass for our last week at home and condolences for Mom's passing. As a 27 year military Retiree, Chopticon High Graduate and resident of Golden Beach MD in my youth, I couldn't have felt more proud to have come from St Mary's County MD that day. The SMAC Staff is friendly, loving and do a great job maintaing the fitness center. I give this place my highest recommendation! Thank you and God Bless to All the SMAC Staff. God bless, SMSgt Tom Hartswick,...
Read moreIf you’re into breathing in years of dust and visible mold, this might be your spot. Look up and you’ll see an open concrete ceiling coated with thick dust layered on vents and fans like some kind of prehistoric sediment. The tops of the walls? Mold. Clearly not recent—this is the result of long-term neglect.
I spilled a bit of water and wiped it up—what came off the floor was so dirty, it looked like I’d cleaned a chimney. Safe to say a mop hasn’t made an appearance here in a long while.
The equipment is no better: old, worn, and borderline unsafe. It’s like the gym is stuck in time, slowly decaying while the owner quietly collects dues and avoids maintenance at all costs.
This place doesn’t feel like a gym. It feels like an abandoned warehouse that someone left treadmills in. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re current on your tetanus shot and enjoy working...
