The first time I went to rays I never wanted to come back. The checker was rude, the manager was rude. They had loads of expired beer in their beer area. I was buying other groceries and as I was checking out I asked to buy one 6 pack half price considering it was expired. With no softness or friendliness at all the checker said “I’ll get the manager” the manager came by and said, again with no friendliness, no smile, no apology, no customer service “nope. We don’t do that here” grabbed the 6 pack off the check stand and walked off. Never once did I show frustration or agitation, I know what it’s like to have customers all day so I am not rude to those serving me.. but I guess their paying customers dont deserve an explanation with the answer or understanding or just general human kindness I guess? I said to the checker.. I just wanna let you know that most of your beer has actually expired back there. The response? “That’s not our problem it is up to the distributor” period. ok fine, couldn’t she have said “thanks for letting us know, I’ll tell my manager and we’ll call the distributor “??? Never have I been treated with such hostility when Grocery shopping. Nothing else was said to me while the checker finished checking my groceries. she didn’t even make eye contact with me. I paid and left. Unfortunately I still go back because it is so close to my house, and that same checker doesn’t make eye contact with any customers including me. Oh, and lots of their beer is still expired! Yes I check every time I go. Fun stuff. Would love a new grocery store in Prineville to...
Read moreMy husband and I have been rehabbing a rental in the area. While in town we have been purchasing groceries, sundries, cleaning products etc. from Ray's and felt good shopping locally. March 6th, I couldn't believe what I heard. One of the cashiers stormed past me. Another cashier asked "What's wrong? Not old enough?". The first cashier replied "No he doesn't speak English, and I don't speak Spanish. He can't prove how old he is I don't understand him! If he wants me to sell him alcohol he needs to speak English. Probably illegal anyway!"
I was shocked! Of course I believe the cashier needs to know a person's DOB to sell them alcohol, that's not the issue. It was the last statement, "If he wants me to sell him alcohol he needs to speak English. Probably illegal anyway. " So racist! And what's worse? The fact that the cashier felt comfortable enough to make these statements in front of customers, tells me he has probably; done before and said worse in private. Further, I'm concerned this cashier isn't worried about getting caught. People don't say things like that at work unless they know they won't get in trouble.
I had no idea Ray's had such a racist philosophy. We won't shop...
Read moreTerrific variety across every department. In particular the food, especially produce selection as well as a great meat department. Really impressive actually, but they fall way short of gaining even a single star more with the absolutely abominable prices!!! Example: 1# bag of mini sweet bell peppers, which would cost me $3-$4 normally, were $9! If the selection and quality weren't too notch, I'd be giving 2 stars. To be honest, the saving grace was for me was my checkout. My cashier's empathy for my irritation with my face mask, and overall personable demeanor was Ray's salvation. Prineville gets a bad rap , unfortunately, sometimes as being unsophisticated, which is simply not true if you know how to look beneath the outer shell. Ray's certainly showcases that there is more to Prineville than first impressions. But the prices are so insane as to scare off at least this return customer. And that's a shame. There's so little to get excited about these days, but I'm a true foodie and would have happily spent a lot of time, and therefore money, there if I felt like I wasn't being robbed everytime I put...
