I am writing to share a troubling experience I recently encountered, which has compelled me to submit a review despite having never done so before anywhere. Having resided in the Reno/Sparks area for the past 45 years, I have never experienced such discourteous treatment. During a recent shopping trip with my sister and fiancé, we decided to visit the hot food area to obtain a meal after we had been shopping for a while. Although the line was notably long due to Taco Tuesday, we were prepared to wait. However, when it was our turn to be served, the employee overlooked us and assisted the next customer instead. We assumed this was an oversight and chose to wait patiently. Unfortunately, the subsequent employee also ignored us, opting to assist another individual while conversing in Spanish. This occurrence continued for five additional instances, leading us to conclude that we were being disregarded based on our race. At this juncture, I requested to speak with a manager. The cashier simply gestured toward a manager located further down the area. I asked her if she would please get the manager for me. Upon her arrival, I began to explain our experience and express our feelings of discrimination. Regrettably, the manager (Sandra) appeared unfazed and maintained a smile throughout our conversation. She assured me that she would address the issue with the staff, but you could clearly tell she would more than likely not do anything about this at all, as she continued to smile at me. I informed her that we had intended to purchase food after our shopping, but due to the unpleasant treatment we received, we decided against it. We, in fact, decided to leave the full shopping cart behind as well at this point. Since this manager acted as if she didn't care at all about what had just happened, I then inquired about the store manager. She clarified that she was the manager for both the food area and the entire store. This experience has been the most disheartening I have ever encountered, particularly given my age and the numerous establishments I have visited. I would not recommend patronizing this establishment unless one is willing to endure treatment that suggests their presence is unwelcome based on their race, all while being met with indifference from management. I want to emphasize something important in this review: I do not perceive color and identify as mixed race. It is my belief that those who have difficulty looking beyond color and race should not be working in...
Read moreI've never seen a store so racist...I mean I am a African American male, and I get racially profiled pretty much every where I go, grocery stores, convenience stores, you name it...but the display I witnessed, and was a part of last night at the El super market was damn near disgusting. Myself, my fiance, and her sister, which by the way are half Caucasian and Mexican mixed, got to your store at about 7:30 pm on Tuesday the 23rd...first we looked around a bit, and picked up a couple of items; then we decided we would get some hot food before we checked out. So we stood in line first looking to see what we wanted, then decided amongst each other, and tried to get help from workers or servers which were all Mexican or "Hispanic"; and to our surprise, they would not even give us eye contact- none of them would help us.. They helped eight people behind us- which were all Hispanic...before they even considered looking our way..and we're all looking at each other dumbfounded wondering what the hell was going on-saying to ourselves could they not understand English, or understand us, what is this, we really are being racially profiled right now..I made a comment to my fiance and her sister, "see now you know what I go through from day to day". The hate that we felt from the workers there was very intense...my sister in law was very upset and broke out in tears, and had to leave the store. My wife which speaks Spanish fluently asked one of the workers to speak to the manager-and was told(in English )"she's over there" like someone telling a dog to fetch or something like that. My fiance tells her no, can you get her...and she gives us a dirty look and then goes to her manager. The manger comes over and we explained to her what happened...and she was very insensitive..I'm pretty sure she sides with her employees...and condones what they do..the reason I say that is because we didn't feel any kind of remorse from her, all we got was a phone number and email to contact the director of the store or something like that...not taking no accountability- just passing the buck. The bottom line is we are disappointed, and will never go to this store again....We will not spend money somewhere that we are...
Read moreOk first let me just say wow! I still haven't gotten my blood pressure to go back down from this visit to this new grocery store. Right at the doors there's a problem. The chunky security guy comes right at me.. " no no you can't have ur pet in here" "go go now"! I said .first off . Hi . This is corn dog, and he is my service animal . Not my pet! He cut me off before I could get another word out.. show me.. he says.. um I don't have to show up anything. And that's not the ONLY 2 QUESTIONS you can ask me! Let me guess.. u don't know what u can ask and what u cant.. he simply says. This is my store and we don't want pets in here. I said .well good cause pets belong at home, and corn dog is not a pet, he's my registered service animal. Then cause I could feel my blood pressure sky rocketing(as could corndog), I decided to show him (proof). I also showed him what he was allowed to ask and what he can't. He still said he can DEMAND proof because it's posted no pets, and it's his store! So I sat and argued with this guy for over 35 min.. so now I only had 20 minutes to go shopping. I'm still highly upset, and baffled at why someone who is there to protect the law, but don't know when there breaking it! My entire first trip to this place was a bust I hate it. And prices are too high, and way too much spoiled rotten food there..and the place needs to be cleaned up with...
